Do not stand by my grave and weep ... I am not there; I do not sleep. When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds circling in flight. Do not stand by my grave and cry ... I am not there. I did not die. -- Royster I am the great-grandson of a soldier of the Civil War. I am the grandson of a soldier of the Great War. I am the son of a soldier of Korea, and Vietnam. I was a "Brat". I was a soldier. I am still...

LT Cowherd's twin brother was my classmate and friend at VMI. After graduation, the next time we met was at Arlington National Cemetary in June 2004, to say goodbye to a mutual friend from VMI who also fallen in Iraq.

I asked him how things were going, and told him I was sorry to hear about his brother. He gestured off to a row of graves and quietly said "he's over there." You could hear the pain in his voice.

I wished him well and said my goodbyes quickly....I didn't want him to see the tears welling up in my eyes.

Thanks for posting this John.

May I offer an appropriate poem by Collen Hitchcock...

Ascension

And if I go,
while you're still here...
Know that I live on,
vibrating to a different measure
--behind a thin veil you cannot see through.
You will not see me,
so you must have faith.
I wait for the time when we can soar together again,
--both aware of each other.
Until then, live your life to its fullest.
And when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart,
...I will be there.

Thank you for sharing this. Would that every person who calls himself or herself an American read it and feel the emotions -- gratitude, sorrow, pride, and (yes) anger.

Thank you.

A sharp military salute and heartfelt "thanks" to 2LT Cowherd & his family, as well as to ALL other veterans and their families who have sacrificed and given so much to help preserve the freedoms and culture so many of us Americans take for granted.
