On Saturday afternoon, I was sitting in my lawn chair, drinking beer and watching my wife mow the lawn. The neighbor lady from across the street was so outraged that she came over and shouted at me, "You should be hung." I took a drink from my can of Budweiser, wiped the cold foam from my lips, lifted my darkened Ray-Ban sunglasses and stared directly at the neighbor. And then calmly replied, "I am, that's why she cuts the grass."...

My mom was born and raised in the South. When she married my dad, they moved to SoCal and that is where I was born and raised. After I graduated from high school, dad retired and they moved back to the South.

They hadn't been in their house for more than 2 weeks and my mom decided to go mow the front lawn. Dad was in the garage working on something having to do with the house and mom enjoyed mowing so it was no big deal. In the course of the hour it took her to mow the lawn (the front lawn is pretty big...they live on an acre of land), 4 men stopped to offer their condolences. When the first man stopped, mom didn't understand. She had to ask why he was offering condolences. He explained that her husband MUST have died - otherwise, why was SHE out mowing the lawn when it was "man's work"? I thought she was going to send that lawnmower through his windshield! Gotta love the South!

On the distaff side - When my children were young and I was still married, I waitressed in a Chinese restaurant. During a discussion with some of the regulars, other waitresses and some assorted spouses, the subject was ironing the stupid waitress uniforms. I mentioned that my husband ironed mine, he had been in the service and ironed very well, I was left handed and ironed in more wrinkles than I started with. One waitresses husband, Jim pressed the point so I whispered in his ear about a particular activity that I really, really enjoyed. My ex laughed and said "You'd iron her clothes too!" Everytime I saw him after that.....Jim offered to iron something for me.
