From KCSteve, a reminder (via Head's Bunker.) that there are Bad People out there. Gentleman in Georgia has his (very nice) Luger collection stolen while transporting it to a gun show. Bad for all the usual reasons. Any readers in the Southeast US who frequent gun shows or watch the classifieds for guns should carry this list around with them - especially if you see a new vendor selling Lugers. BTW - the ATFE people have thoughtfully provided a form (not required for anyone) to record your personal weapons on that captures the data law enforcement and your insurance company...

"Appearing" normal is overrated. The real weirdness resides between the ears.

What bothers me about the theft is not so much what the criminals will use the guns for, but what the criminals will do to the guns. (Yeah, I'm weird that way, more attached to things than people, lacking in mirror neurons, etc. Make the most of it.)

That all depends, as was said above, on whether or not they were stolen by high-class thieves.

I hope it was whether, and not not.

If they were stolen by high-class thieves, at least maybe they'll be well looked after and not used to shoot people.

Really sucks to be the theft victim, though.

Has any effort been made to contact gun show promoters? To the best of my knowledge, there are only two or three who actually put on most of the shows in Florida, Suncoast Gun Shows being the one that comes to mind.

Speaking of Bad People out there...

Late one night, a burglar broke into a house he thought was empty.
He tiptoed through the living room but froze in his tracks when he heard a loud voice say, "Jesus is watching you!"

Silence returned to the house, so the burglar crept forward again.

"Jesus is watching you," the voice boomed again.

The burglar stopped dead again, now thoroughly frightened. He peered around frantically and, in a dark corner, he spotted a parrot gazing at him from a bird cage.

He asked the parrot, "Was that *you* who said Jesus is watching me?"

"Yes," said the parrot.

The burglar breathed a sigh of relief and asked the parrot, "What's your name?"

"Clarence," said the bird.

"That's a stupid name for a parrot," sneered the burglar. "What stupid idiot would name a parrot 'Clarence'?"

The parrot said, "The same stupid idiot who named the Rottweiler 'Jesus'."

                Thanks John!

As I said on me email I figure your blog is one of the best places to get this information out. I'm sure a lot of people seeking information on the luger they're being offered / just bought wind up here.

I wonder if there's someone out there with the resources to set up a call-in SN check for firearms. All you need is an off-the-shelf voice recognition system to get the make, model, and SN and the database of known stolen weapons. If BATFE or someone set it up I'm sure it would get called from just about every gun show in the country. Could easily save someone $350. ;)

If you want an example of such a system call UPS's 800 number. It will walk you through tracking a package (with their insane 16-character tracking numbers) and anything you could reasonably do with it, all without touching a key.

I quote:

The Exhibitions
The exhibitions are situated in the impressive arsenal built by Christian IV in 1598-1604. The 156 meter long Arsenal Hall on the ground floor is the longest arched hall in Europe, the cross vaults of which are supported by sixteen heavy centre pillars. The massive strength of the hall is intensified by the deep recesses which reveal the immense thickness of the walls. Today, the hall contains some 350 historical guns, mortars and howitzers as well as artillery accessories. The first floor also consists of one single hall, The Armoury Hall, the amazing lenght of which is emphasized by five rows of slender wooden pillars. Just as the Arsenal Hall always has been used for storage of artillery, the Armoury Hall has always been used for storage of handweapons. Today, some 7000 handweapons from 1300 till today are on display in the hall.

" You *ask* my server for these packets."

My computer actually wakes me up at night wanting more packets from your server....

Here's hoping they catch the scum that stole that collection soon. One of the things that I really like about the internet is that that kind of information gets out quickly, so If I happen to see a nice Lugar at at a show on this side of the country that's the first thing I'm going to check for. And I know the same applies to the rest of the country.

I get inspired every time you go under the hood of one of your toys - one of these days I'll try to do something like that myself although I don't have anywhere near the goodies that you have. Nor the writing skills.... Oh, well...

Probably keep them for a collection or sell them to other collectors.

They aren't going to be popular "on the block" they don't look like Glocks, and Smiths, and other kewl toys the 'bangers like.

Y'know, they look ugly, and old and stuff. And if ya hold to sideways (like you have to do if you're a "withit" 'banger) they won't be reliable, either.

But they are 9mms, so that's a plus. My guess is they'll end up in the hands of the Dark Side dealers who will move them around the region where they'll end up being sold at gun shows and other places to unsuspecting buyers who don't have the ability to run the sn's. Most reputable dealers I know will run the sn's of weapons they aren't sure of the provenance for.

I bought a Mauser C12 from a dealer in KC back in the middle 80's - a dealer who turned out to be not a Good Person. When I traded that C12 for a different pistol with a dealer near Fort Riley, that dealer ran the numbers and found out it was stolen. I had to return the other pistol, and the police took the stolen pistol and returned it to it's owner - and the guy I bought it from ended up getting arrested for moving stolen goods.

And I was out $350.
