Sorry to have been off the net for so long, but I've been focused on switching seats in the airplane I fly. I now have a window and can see out the front. This is good. I've been watching the fur fly in some many areas (Iran's effort to build its own Nuclear Party Favors to pop over the heads of those pesky Jews (among others), Ted Kennedy sonorous dronings-on about the inherent evil of the President's latest SCOTUS nominee, Joel Stein bearing his MoveOn.org soul, etc., etc.) that it's hard to know where to begin. Moreover, it's somewhat intimidating...

On Ted - wouldn't the actual charge be "homicide by negligent use of a motor vehicle" rather than murder? :-)

Hi, Dusty, welcome back! Glad you are a little farther away from bad smells in the three-holer. (one of my favorite airplanes to ride in; I remember watching the wing do its origami thing going in and out of Page Field in Fort Myers.)

On the Iran-Iraq thing: Well, I think the Neo-Jacobins have led us down the garden path, and others (y'all, the young folks, maybe even poor ol' me, {None of us wants *that*!}) may have to retrieve their chestnuts.

Sorry if I may seem incoherent, but I have to type quickly because I turn into a pumpkin at 0200 EST. The sweety has set the parental controls on the router here, and there ain't much I can do, she having root, and a revolver.

Dear Iranian Students and Other Dissidents:

We've been waiting 10 years for you to get your sh*t together. We don't think that we have 10 more. Less than five at the current estimates for time to build a nuclear weapon. We highly recommend that you get crackin' before we are forced to do so.

We have heard from many freedom loving Iranians that they want help, not invasion. Tell us what you need and you'll get it, however, you should be warned that while we would like t adhere to your wishes and not destroy your country, culture and monuments to your thousands of years of history, we cannot wait until madmen have the nuke to act.

I'm afraid playing in underground rock bands and wearing pink hijabs with some hair showing is not quite getting it.

We respectfully request, as Michael Ledeen says: Faster please. We really do prefer non-violence on our part, contrary to popular belief, but, as a citizen of this country, if the mad Mullahs and Almond Head keep up the pace, it's bombs away and sionora.

Yours in friendship and hope of a fine future with huge trade incentives and open diplomatic relationships with a free and democratic Iran,

Kat

It's true that blogging and other Open forms of communication are a potential positive influence (although, heaven help us if they are reading Kos instead of Argghhh!). Then again, look at the whole issue of China shutting down blogs with 'undesirable' content on it. The Blogosphere is somewhat under the radar - but not totally.

                Barb,

Remember how well indoctrination worked in the Soviet Union? Hint: not very well. Some could say it was effective in Nazi Germany (the closest analogy) but with today's hard-to-control access to the rest of the world and a population less supportinve of its leadership--the bloom is off the rose, as it were, in Iran I think--I think the chances are greater than you may think.

I say this whenever I get the chance, slowly working to spread the meme in the hope it gets back to him someday:

"You shouldn't be so hard on poor 'ol Teddy. After all, he has to live with being the brother who wasn't worth shooting."

Dusty - I agree with your concerns, but I'm not sure that the message / approach you describe will be (a) received by the necessary Iranian citizens, or (b) able to counter the kinds of indoctrination the local media of the country feeds it's populace. Check out some of these from the MEMRI (Middle East Media Research Institute) site on Iran :
