Even AAFES pays a price in the war.

AAFES - the Army and Air Force Exchange Service - runs the Post Exchange system, the retail stores operated on military installations the profit from which funds Morale Welfare and Recreation services, vice your tax dollars. They follow the troops, and show up surprisingly fast in combat zones.

And they suffer casualties.

DoD Identifies Department of Defense Civilian Casualty

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a Department of Defense civilian who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Darren D. Braswell, 36, of Riverdale, Ga., died Jan. 7 near Tal Afar, Iraq, when the

UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter in which he was a passenger crashed. Braswell worked for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service.

For further information related to this release, contact the Army and Air Force Exchange Service Public Affairs at (214) 312-3861.

As a soldier who did his share of deploying and really appreciated the efforts of AAFES personnel on our behalf, I thought it important to note Mr. Braswell's death, and to send word forward to make a place at the Stammtisch at Fiddler's Green.

Now is the time at Castle Argghhh! when we dance: In Memoriam.

I saw that this morning on the defense link we they announced the names. One reason why I included a story about civilians working over there, not to be forgotten and certainly just as honorable as the men and women in uniform, doing hard, sometimes boring and menial, parts of the job so the military can focus on fighting. God speed to these folks and good luck to those who are still there.

I have the utmost respect for anyone who attempts to make the soldier's life more bearable. God Bless Mr. Braswell.

The AAFES employees are probably the most under-appreciated members of the extended military family. Under-appreciated *except* by the troops downrange. You helped make a hard row easier, Mr. Braswell--Godspeed. ...and you've got friends waiting for you at Fiddler's Green...
