Sigh.

It's a very, very hard weekend at 29 Palms. When they dribble in in ones and twos, that's one thing. 10 death notifications, with the associated 11 WIA notifications, all from one small unit - it's a rough day in the Corps.

No. 1252-05 Dec 03, 2005 IMMEDIATE RELEASE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DoD Identifies Marine Casualties
The Department of Defense announced today the death of 10 Marines who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

All 10 Marines were assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, their unit was attached to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Media with questions about these Marines can call the Twentynine Palms Public Affairs Office at (760) 830-6213.

This seems a good time to link to Bill Lind's piece on Operational IEDs and 4th Generation Warfare. Food for thought, regardless of what else you might think of Lind's thoughts on the subject of war and other things.

I gotta admit - Van Creveld did some useful work in the 70's and 80's, but lately seems have just gotten to be a crabby curmudgeon, but sometimes we've got to get out of the echo chamber and consider other viewpoints. I don't find his assessment persuasive at this juncture.

While it's small comfort - there is less joy in Jihadiville today, too.

The fledgling Iraqi Air Force (which has had some serious problems with corruption) is starting to get off the ground. Heh. I wonder if the Iranians will ever return the last Iraqi Air Force - the one that flew to Iran during Desert Storm because they knew that being anywhere else was going to be fatal. Nah, probably better to start from scratch.

Jerry Pournelle's comment on said article was:
It is a foolish article with some wise points; I am tempted to say Martin van Creveld has lost his mind, which is a shame because it was a great mind.
When you lose a war-skeptic like Pournelle...

John, I'm with you on Van Creveld. Outside some weak points in his argument, I have to question the non-emotional buy-in of his analysis. All praise Van Creveld..etc...etc..etc... But.....any credibility for this article was lost with his 8th grade history mistake and just plain wrong mention of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9AD. Anyone that has even done the basics, oh like watching The History Channel or Wikipedia (or read thick heavy collections of parts of dead trees) will know that the loss had everything to do with the Vain and out-of-his-league Varus and the brilliant deception, INFO OPS, and tactical preparation of the battlefield by Arminius. Van Creveld's statement, "For misleading the American people, and launching the most foolish war since Emperor Augustus in 9 B.C sent his legions into Germany and lost them, Bush deserves to be impeached and, once he has been removed from office, put on trial along with the rest of the president's men. If convicted, they'll have plenty of time to mull over their sins." ...is just so bass-akwards to be laughable. He should know better than that. There are plenty of things to nit-pic about, and we could use up half your bandwidth with "Greatest Military Blunders and Stupid Wars" and, well, really. John, I don't know who he is talking to about the sitation in Iraq, but what he is babbling about isn't in anyone's Branch Plan and the view he is getting from the ground must be from a parallel universe. What he is putting out is one of the worst plans I have read. The only thing worse would be if the Iraq woke up one AM and every 747 in the free world just loaded up all the foreign troops overnight and took them home, leaving nothing behind but pork BBQ sandwitches. His family should have him checked for a MRI.

My heart goes out to the families of the fallen - a hard day for one small unit. Rest in Peace, Marines.

I thought of you as soon as I heard this, John, 'cause I knew you knew better than me exactly where my thought should go. Sad news.
