Assad loses his mind.

Jim B points us to this from the World Tribune:

LONDON — Syria has signed a pledge to store Iranian nuclear weapons and missiles.

Heh. That headline should read: LONDON — Syria has signed a pledge to be targets number 1 through "No stone left standing one upon the other" in the both the US and Israeli Air Tasking Orders by agreeing to store Iranian nuclear weapons and missiles.

Really. How dumb is this guy? Of course, since at the moment, *we're* sitting across the land route, perhaps he's expecting aerial delivery... I would guess Assad figures he's never going to be asked to make good on the deal.

With an American Army sitting in Iraq, this just seems dumb. Unless Assad *wants* us to stay there...

Comrades, Sooooo.... anyway care to bet whether the MSM will ask the next logical question? If Syria made THIS pact with Iran to hide WMD's, doesn't that lend credence to the claims that Syria hid WMD's for Saddam? Or is that just to darn symplistic and/or conveniant? Syria is the home of the Baathasit Party, and where Saddam got his start as a thug/enforcer type for the party. It seems logical to me (and perhaps that's naive of me, I know..) that Saddam called in favors with Syria to hids his "stash". After all, it's a no-brainer for the Syrians. If Saddam holds off the Americans, then Syria reaps the benefits of being the strong man's ally. If Saddam folds, then Syria has a whole arsenal of WMD's available for it's nefarious purposes. A whole lot of evil might be done that way... Respects, AW1 Tim

Anything's possible I suppose. At this point, my theory is twofold: 1. Saddam wanted to retain the ability to resume manufacture of several different types of weapons, primarily Nuclear and Chemical, sometime in the future when sanctions were lifted. 2. Saddam is actually the source of the 'leaked' bits of intelligence that fooled NOT ONLY the United States, but all concerned nations with capable intelligence gathering networks. Iraq was not 'clean' after the war. They DID maintain materials for manufacture, but no actual finished products, beyond some component parts that had been declared to the UN inspection teams, such as thier RDX explosives stockpiles. Saddam invested too much in his weapons manufacturing programs to have them completely evaporate. My second theory about the source of the intelligence is pretty simple to outline. Saddam profited massively in two ways from the inspections. First, monetarily, and second it kept his people weak, highly dependant on the dregs and leavings of the incoming oil for food money and supplies that were allowed to actually reach the people. It was in Saddam's best interest to keep sanctions alive, hence the screwing around with our inspectors, and various bits of leaked intel, probing diplomatic missions to Niger to inquire about purchasing Uranium, etc. I believe that Saddam tried to maintain a balance of continued sanctions for profit and to dominate his people, without provoking the UN to actual action. I think Saddam 'mis-underestimated' our President's resolve to END this long standing stalemate, and his ability to rally international support to eliminate the baathist regime in Iraq, over the objections of certain parties on the UN Security Council. I'll admit that it's possible WMD's were shipped over to Syria, noting that Saddam made the mistake of sending most of his Air Force over to Iran, for 'safe keeping'. However, I doubt completed biological or chemical devices were shipped en-masse to Syria. They are most likely either consumed in the Iraq-Iran war, or consumed keeping the Kurds under control, in incidents that were not documented, and conflicts we did not witness, and Iraq did not declare. Based on our knowledge of the growth media purchases they made, most of his bio weapons were probably past their pull date in '03 anyway. I wouldn't eat the stuff, but it would have lacked potency as a military weapon. Chemical weapons, particularly binary weapons are another matter. I expect those will be found buried in the desert, leaking, corroded and probably useless, most likely hundreds of years from now during some farming and irrigation project. The people who had direct knowledge of where to find it now are all probably dead already. Anyway, I don't think Syria, even if they had all this stuff is particularly dangerous to the United States. It's pretty hard to be MORE dangerous than the Soviets were during the cold war, and we made it through that alive. Syria MUST know they lack the power to eliminate us, and that it would take only a small amount of resources that we really don't need lying around in our backyards anymore to pave over their country anyway. Save us some disposal costs. I think Syria's announcement was a poorly planned grab for political attention, and maybe some barganing power. Nothing more.

Bleh.. that's 'Bargaining'... Spotted it as the thing was posting but didn't want to cause an echo.

Anybody wonder why they let "dr germ" and "Mrs. Anthrax" go?

I heard that the one of them that attended the University of Missouri is coming back to MU to teach the International Govenment class on the Holocaust and other religious myths. The class will be a graduate level class.

Sheesh, Jim. Gonna make me take down my diploma...

Shhhhhhh I am attending a free on line course over at Dr Sanity's place ... here is an excerpt: http://drsanity.blogspot.com/ Just a few examples to show what I mean by this: - by using projection some very violent and angry people are able to convince themselves that they are working for peace and harmony. - by using delusional projection some religious fanatics who behead innocent people are able to convince themselves that they are pure and holy, while" infidels" like Jews are monsters who "eat babies" and decend from "pigs and monkeys" - by using displacement, some people are able to convince themselves that there is a devious plan to imminently replace our secular government with a Christian theocracy; while they are singularly unconcerned about religious fanatics actively waging war on the U.S. and the rest of the world trying to institute an Islamic theoracy. - by using fantasy some people are able to convince themselves that these particular religious fanatics are reasonable and sensible people, amenable to negotiation - by using denial some people are able to convince themselves that there is no such thing as Islamofascism and that the war on terror is just a political ploy by an administration they don't like to accumulate power. - by using repression some people would like to eliminate all personal thoughts about 9/11 and wipe it from our collective consciousness When dealing with well-defended people like this, one of the refrains commonly heard when you point out their defense to them, is that it is not they who are in denial about reality--it is you! It is not they who are projecting, it is you! It is not they who fail to see the danger, it is you! You think you are living in a democracy but you are wrong, the members of this "reality-based" community say, we are living under fascism (see here, for example). ... day before yesterday she posted a quiz on what kinda nuts use what defense, she hasn't posted the answers yet... I await with baited breath.
