"Far across the Chattahoochee, along the Upatoi, stands our loyal alma mater, Benning School for Boys."

Though there are a lot of girls here now, too.

Random thoughts as I get settled in here for the next two weeks.

When you've been a collector long enough, you get emails like this:

John, Spent the day with a collector from Louisiana, he's up here getting parts for his 155mm Long Tom. Says he also has a Pack 75, 57mm anti tank gun and a early war 37mm. And some WWI stuff. But where can you shoot them? He was full of stories...... thought I'd pass that on. Scott

That's why I'm the Armorer... people tell me stuff. And ask questions. You just *wish* you got emails like this. And now I know another guy I can swap tales, and parts, with.

Delta Airlines. I got upgraded to First Class yesterday (corporate travel perk, ticket was coach fare). Throughout the whole process of check-in, boarding, and flight, I was treated worse, in terms of human interaction, than any of the discount-fare airlines. Nothing overt, nothing nasty, and I doubt they saw it - all I know is, from the pilot who took out on the screener his frustration at having to take his shoes off, to the distant way I was treated by the remaining staff - I would rather fly Southwest, Continental, Frontier, than fly Delta again. It struck me as I was schlepping myself through the interminable terminal that is Hartsfield - the last airline that I had this same feeling and vibe from the employees? TWA. And this is a trend - not the TWA thing, but the grumpy Delta employees. And that's cutting them slack for obviously they are under stress due to the bankruptcy filing. But, for the record - I had that feeling about Delta (and American) long before they ever filed for bankruptcy. Which is why we have a lot of free tickets on Southwest these days, and a Companion Pass.

Just sayin'.

Columbus, Georgia is doing a lot of work revitalizing their downtown riverfront area. There are still pockets of misery in this town, but every time I've visited, things have (to outside eyes at least) seemed better every time. I especially like the way they are saving their classic industrial architecture (the mills on the river) and turning them into retail and office spaces. There is a great antique store in one of them, should I ever get SWWBO down this way. Now if only Alabama could get some of that action going for the city across the bridges - Phenix City. Mebbe if they changed the spelling of the name, it would rise from the forlorn ruins that are their side of the river.

Fort Benning. This place is looking better, too. And the troops seem to be in fine fettle. Sat around being as inconspicuous non-officerlike as it's possible for me to be (kinda like Orson Welles at an Anorexics Anonymous meeting, I'm sure) and just nursed the laptop, soda, or later beer, and listened. These kids are sharp, and they are paying attention. And while no one who has been over into a sandbox is anxious to go back - they *are* anxious that the job get done, and done right. And they think they are doing a pretty good job. They have respect for jihadis who will stand and deliver, but little more than bemused contempt for the suicide bombers who go after civilians. They don't like the ones that attack them, mind you - but they *don't* like the ones who go after the civilians. The ones who have an opinion have a mixed opinion on the Iraqi government, especially the police. But the general consensus was that they were improving. They were past Mayberry, but not up to NYPD Blue. Mind you, this was a very limited sample of troops.

But they *do* admire the civilians who take the risks and do so every day to try to make a better world for their children - even as the jihadis try to kill them.

I'm looking forward to walking among the young soldiers again, and listening to their stories. Both the ones who still dream of glory, and those who know that all fame is fleeting, and glory is hogwash - but covering your buddies ass in a firefight is, well, sublime.

Lastly there is this - Ry, it will get you fired. A full moon over Russia.

Yay...I get to be the first commentor! Now, I haven't been to Ft Benning or Columbus since 2000, back when they were just starting this revitilization thing. I'm all for cities doing that, but they did do one thing that bothered me: the slow strangulation of the wicked-naughty type fun found on Victory Drive. They had just recently instituted a no-booze or no nudity policy for the city's strip clubs. You know what Columbus? You're a military town. Lighten the hell up, and allow us soldier boys to have some places to get liquored up and see some nekkid women. Oh, and if you need some good eats with good beer, hit the Cannon Brewpub downtown. (You'll love it-they've got a brass cannon out front.) Plus they sell shirts and other paraphenalia with a BEER tab emblazoned on them (take the Ranger tab, and replace the word Ranger with Beer). For all things fried, try Gus' Chick 'N' Shrimp on Victory Drive. It doesn't look like much, but the food's good.

Ooh, pack 75! Cutest little piece ever made! You have pictures, maybe? The lunar apparition ain't bad, either. Fundamental, y'know.

YAY! John's back at Benning! I need to find out the name of my cousin's micro-brewery. It's in downtown Columbus. He's a brewer there. Funny occupation for a SOUTHERN BAPTIST! *oh... the irony* They are "famous" for their fire-grilled pizzas and calzone's. They are delicious, and frikkin' huge. They throw the pizza dough, so it's fun to watch and eat. My Grandma lives in Phenix City, btw. Aunt and cousin, the brewer, live in Columbus. I haven't been there in a while. I sure do miss it. The red dirt, the sweet smell of pine trees, the cicadas chirping, grits, butter beans, purple hull crowder peas, black eyed peas, greens, cornbread, fried pies, the smell of gas stoves (we always had an electric stove, so that smell always reminds me of Georgia and Alabama), boiled peanuts, red ants (BAD... very BAD), walking to the store for candy cigarettes and chocolate Yoo Hoo, swimming at Liberty Bell pool. So many wonderful memories.... Enjoy yourself, John!

Stop that right now, AFSis, you're making me weep. I was a little kid in GA in the 50s. I'll see yer bet, and raise you a genuine Orange Crush, in the brown bottle.

I'll see your Orange Crush in a brown bottle, and raise you a Moon Pie, JTG. Push me any further and I'll have to pull out the big guns- RC Cola, Dr. Pepper, pecan pie, lane cake, and country ham & biscuits.

AFSis, I'm folding my hand and retiring, not because it's not a winning one, but because it's getting late, and I'm too sleepy to play it properly. 'nite!

Poor Delta. If the employees are raining on you it's because management is raining on them. A fish rots from the head.

Oh, yeah, Fort Beginning. I grew up in Columbus and enlisted in the Marines just to get the he!! out of there. Seven years later, couldn't wait to get home. Spent a lotta years after that working on Ft. B as a RC Seabee; we'd build things for the Rangers, and they'd let us play with (some of)their toys. Been out of Columbus for years now, Momma says the city's spreading like kudzu; too many people for me. Phenix City always sucked, plus all my exes live there.

And I get the ninth slot. Looks like the troops need to read the 'Never surrender' screed you put up there earlier. Never to surrender to evil or compromise your morals. If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything. Non violence doesn't always work. If it did, this blog would not exist.

And we will be replenishing the Engineer's larder this weekend by traipsing down to Benning and buying out the commissary. This entails ice chests in the back of the Precious, beef jerky and games to keep the Child Labor Units happy and content for the 55 minute trip. heh. We just might bring the grill and cook some brats with onion relish if John is able to join us for lunch.

ITA VERO FREDE: PESCEM PRIMUM AD CAPUT FOET! And do I detect JTG & AFS enjoying a round of "Spin the Bottle"? Oh, and no wonder the Red Army kicked some butt! Their Moonlight vision blinded all them Nazis.

Not spin the bottle, Boq.... Twister!

JTG and AFSis are playing Twisted Sister? Kewl.

Great to see your have a good and productive time at Ft. Benning. By the way, by far IMHO the best Army post around. Just 18 months ago we left there for Ft. Knox. Ah what a change (and not one for the better). We had our own place up in Smiths Station, just north of Phenix City. The analogy of it growing like Kudzo is accurate. Columbus is getting big, but that's one of the things that made it good. Have a great time, and try the Cannon out (they were great supporters of our BN, 1-10 FA) as well as a couple other resteraunts downtown. Have fun

As Bill Moroevsky once so beautifully composed: ***Queue in the Balalaikas*** Blue Moon of Katersky, keep on shining. Shine on the one that's gone and proved untrue....

Thanks for the warning, JOhn. Yeah, Miss Thang would likely have objected to that. We still reads those, yes we does.

Moon... Yummm... There was a tank in that picture?

Have fun at Benning. Did you know that $7.1 million for access roads, foot paths and parking lots on the land where the new National Infantry Museum is being built is being called "pork" by the Porkbuster's people? I also noticed that $3 million for expanding Kennesaw National Battlefield is on the Porkbuster's list..... If you make it back over here to Andersonville let me know!!

Boqui, and Cricket: Hush yo' moufs! Have you no shame? Besides, there's a personal safety issue here. My ex-sweety, previously my sweety, has now declared that she is my sweety again. She is comfortably into the three-digit IQ range, is good at all of the boy-type skills at which she makes her living, and is nonetheless quite the female. She might suspect me of flirting with some of the gals here. Sometimes I regret helping her to arm herself, though she be 600 miles away. She can be right passionate at times. Owhell, she's a rational grownup, and her State allows her a carry permit.
