Phew... my Elfi was a teacher, and her family had lived in Coburg for generations- as is common in Europe, eh?. Late seventies... (the time period, not Elfi!)
Such a beautiful place, Bavaria- I had a car and spoke fairly good German... cherished memories were easy to come by ;)

Hey Neffi! Nope, the Elfi I knew was from Erlangen. She lived in a house there that was hundreds of years old and had been built by her French Huggonot ancestors when they ran from the exterminations of the early 1500s. Of course, that was in the 70's. She might have moved to Coburg later--was your Elfi a Nurse? I was only ever in Coburg a few times. My favorite town in that area was Selb; a long-cherished set of memories is attached to that place.

Ther Germans are a riot when they get drunk. You would think that such a rule loving people would never let their hair down. What I found even funnier was after a Fest of some kind the town was always back to it's pre fest cleanliness, as if nothing had happened.

I loved the SchnellimBischen. Germany was a kewl place.

Hey, do you remember the ladies who used to run the little corrugated steel snack bars along the roads on Graf (in the temp quarters areas, like Camp Aachen)? I used to hang with a couple of them when I was there 'cause I hated the Stab and Jab--or was that Hohenfels? And they were pretty nice folks. Truth is, I spent more time along the border north of there (between Bayreuth and Hof) than at Graf, and I spent a LOT of time at Graf. Man, I miss that place something fierce sometimes (six years there, longer than anywhere here..).

[sigh] missing bratwurst and jeagerschnitzel und cordon bleu, and Elfi! [bigger sigh]

Maybe not Oktoberfest, but Fasching?!? Now, THAT was another matter.... I loooooooooved Fasching. For all the wrong reasons, of course, but then I was single, I had money, cheap cigarettes, and Jim Beam, and I spoke enough German to attract and keep pretty girls' attention. Kind of amazing how something can sneak up on you and strike a chord you didn't know was there...

Maxwell Smart! Dead!?! And Tennessee Tuxedo too!?! How is that possible!

And No, I am not insensitive to the other story. I lived in South Bend and worked in Mishawaka for a few years (that's where Hummers are made, by the way), and I know all about Notre Dame; it's largesse and charity is legendary.

But I didn't know Montana, and I did 'know' Agent 86 and Tennessee Tuxedo. They were longtime old friends, if you will, from my youth, and although I know that probably doesn't make any sense to anyone but me, it's still about as articulate as I wanna try to be.

Probably not my best post...
