Big sigh.

Good call, Coach. Really.

Agent 86, aka Don Adams, USMCR, has passed to Fiddler's Green. Lieutenant Albert, et. al., await.

Snerk! That ain't the Oktoberfest I remember. Mardi Gras in New Orleans, perhaps, but not Munich!

OUTSTANDING! You've got to admire the courage of that kid and his Mom, and the ND's determination to make his call happen. Truly wonderful story, John!

Got kleenex? Great story and I am so glad he did that for that young man. He saw it anyway. As for Agent 86...you brought a lot of happiness to us. Thanks.

Kind of amazing how something can sneak up on you and strike a chord you didn't know was there... Maxwell Smart! Dead!?! And Tennessee Tuxedo too!?! How is that possible! And No, I am not insensitive to the other story. I lived in South Bend and worked in Mishawaka for a few years (that's where Hummers are made, by the way), and I know all about Notre Dame; it's largesse and charity is legendary. But I didn't know Montana, and I did 'know' Agent 86 and Tennessee Tuxedo. They were longtime old friends, if you will, from my youth, and although I know that probably doesn't make any sense to anyone but me, it's still about as articulate as I wanna try to be. Probably not my best post...

You were a joy to watch as Agent 86! I wonder if the "cone of silence" would fit over Cindy Sheehan's fat ass?

Gene - could we tone it down *just* a touch? No fan of Cindy here, but...

Maybe not Oktoberfest, but Fasching?!? Now, THAT was another matter.... I loooooooooved Fasching. For all the wrong reasons, of course, but then I was single, I had money, cheap cigarettes, and Jim Beam, and I spoke enough German to attract and keep pretty girls' attention. Nothing better anywhere....

I was always at Graf during Fasching, dang it!

Hey, do you remember the ladies who used to run the little corrugated steel snack bars along the roads on Graf (in the temp quarters areas, like Camp Aachen)? I used to hang with a couple of them when I was there 'cause I hated the Stab and Jab--or was that Hohenfels? And they were pretty nice folks. Truth is, I spent more time along the border north of there (between Bayreuth and Hof) than at Graf, and I spent a LOT of time at Graf. Man, I miss that place something fierce sometimes (six years there, longer than anywhere here..). [sigh] missing bratwurst and jeagerschnitzel und cordon bleu, and Elfi! [bigger sigh] :-)

John of Argghhh, I'll try to stay on topic...and I'm grateful for your blog. Wish I could get to a Snell Imbis. Gene

Fun on the Ferris Wheel takes on a WHOLE new meaning for me now!

Ther Germans are a riot when they get drunk. You would think that such a rule loving people would never let their hair down. What I found even funnier was after a Fest of some kind the town was always back to it's pre fest cleanliness, as if nothing had happened. I loved the SchnellimBischen. Germany was a kewl place.

I am raising my eyebrows here. This is a country that doesn't mind selling porn with full frontal nudity. And isn't there a block in Munich where 'anything goes?' Or am I thinking of another Oktoberfest? And wat happen' to all drinking songs, eh?

Hey SangerM- your Elfi didn't live in Coburg, by any chance...?

Hey Neffi! Nope, the Elfi I knew was from Erlangen. She lived in a house there that was hundreds of years old and had been built by her French Huggonot ancestors when they ran from the exterminations of the early 1500s. Of course, that was in the 70's. She might have moved to Coburg later--was your Elfi a Nurse? I was only ever in Coburg a few times. My favorite town in that area was Selb; a long-cherished set of memories is attached to that place.

Stupid Spell Check Operator! Huguenot.

Phew... my Elfi was a teacher, and her family had lived in Coburg for generations- as is common in Europe, eh?. Late seventies... (the time period, not Elfi!) Such a beautiful place, Bavaria- I had a car and spoke fairly good German... cherished memories were easy to come by ;)

Ah, but the totally absurd concept of the shoe-phone, with Adams keeping a deadpan straight face while pretending to use it, trumps all.

Smart drove a Sunbeam Tiger, an interesting Mid-Atlantic sports car.
