Skip that trip to McDonald's. Skip a meal, send the money to the Red Cross. (click the Red Cross logo). I already did. Enough for the next two weeks of lunch, and prolly more after payday. Or any other charity you prefer. We did it for the Tsunami, let's do it for our own, this time. Update: Chuck Simmins has a list of other ways to donate. $10,000,000 so far. Mebbe you're going to be partially wrong, Mike!...

We have a donation going via withholding every month.

Keeps it simple for bookkeeping.

The Red Cross and other private groups do a stellar job in helping victims of disasters. Too bad they can't equip the victims with guns to prevent looting.

After the Loma Prieta quake, our little town deputized a fair few to patrol and shoot looters on sight.

No one looted a thing.

Sorry, no trenchant comments from the AARP Aviation Section.

I always mellow out when I'm a pint low on O negative...

Let us not veer *too* much closer to picking on people, vice picking on arguments... or in addition to picking on arguments.

Don't wanna be DU or Kos, or even the Rottweiler here!

I'll sacrifice the entertainment and traffic.

Oh- and Mudpuppy.... if you have specific issues with Red Cross, I'd be happy to address them in an email. Click my nick and ask away. If you have problems with Red Cross, I may be able to alleviate your concerns.

You know, we were talking here a home a bit ago....

Food for thought; something to be proud of and glad for amidst the devastation: Is this not a great country!? Are we not the greatest people on Earth!?

Where else in the world can people trapped by rising waters climb out on their roofs and expect--EXPECT--a helicopter to come rescue them, or a boat to sail up to get them, and NOT have to worry about being extorted by the rescuers, or terrorized by their neighbors? What other country has a Coast Guard that does a tenth of what ours does, being the one uniformed American service whose mission is to save lives!

Where else is the weather warning system sophisticated enough and trusted enough to convince more than a million people to evacuate such a small area on such short notice! What other country could have accommodated such an evacuation without wholesale rampaging and looting and inhumanity all along the way? Or had the resources to house and feed them all!

Where else is it a GIVEN that when people anywhere need help, millions of citizens respond with money, time, & energy? Where else do people start talking about getting back to work before the disaster is even over!?! Where else do you have to get in line to volunteer to help (as we had to do after Ivan)??

Only here--only in the United States do you get it ALL!

This is the greatest country the Earth has ever known! Not because we are militarily strong, not because we are wealthy, not because we are isolated from old world woes, but because we are a people who don't quit, who don't give up, and who don't leave others behind!

We are Americans. We are the distilled essence of all the good, important parts of humanity everywhere, all the things that really matter, refined over millions of years. We're not a perfect people by any means, but I think we're a lot further along that path that a lot of our detractors are...

And for that, I try to thank God every day!

I was going to reply to Mudpuppy, but everything I wrote was too *pointed*. Thanks for your support, John and Sanger.... you guys ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!

(BIG HUGS)

Sanger- I was in Homestead for two weeks in Sept. right after Andrew... I've been a Disaster Services volunteer for 14 years... I can tell you personal stories of the great things I've seen happen, but having it come from an outside observer means so much more. Thanks. Really. *smile*

I was in Florida where Ivan hit; the Red Cross & the Salvation Army did a GREAT JOB, for WEEKS!!! We're not talking about petty silly financial issues here, we're talking about helping the people who are helping people whose lives are utterly devastated, who need real help right NOW, and "Feed the Children" isn't going to do crap for them!

The Great American Red Cross was in place before Katrina hit, and it will be there for months longer!!! Save your petty politics and churlish minor grievences for when there's nothing more important to deal with.

This matters!!! Give to the Red Cross, Give to the Salvation Army. Do it! Give 'till it hurts! People are dying right now. People have lost everything, and some will lose all before it's over! There are 12-15,000!!!! people in the superdome who still have to be evacuated, who are expected to be stuck there for at least another 4-7 days! There are hundreds dead, hundreds more lost! The Red Cross and the Salvation Army will be there. For everyone. Today!

Give! Just do it!!

Then give some more!!

DO IT!!

Well, Mudpuppy, while I *won't* discourage donations to Feed the Children, I will still stand behind the Red Cross.

All organizations have their bad moments. I think the Red Cross has done far more good than harm, and will continue to support them.

Your mileage obviously varies.

S'cool.

Given the past scandals with the red cross, I would recomend a donation to Feed the Childern. For each dollar, they can deliver 7 pounds of supplies directly to those who need it most.

I mean no disrespect to the red cross, just they have abused the trust of people in the past.

As a long-time Red Cross volunteer... THANKS JOHN!

As a relative of several victims of Katrina (Aunt & Uncle who had to be rescued from their home in Gulf Shores; two cousins may have lost vacation homes; one cousin who lives in New Orleans... all of whom may have lost absolutely EVERYTHING in their homes).... I thank all of you who give.

And for those who cannot afford to give... that's cool too. Just keep them in your prayers, OK?

*sigh*
