The area on top is where the breechblock rests when the gun is opened. The breechblock slides vertically in to the slot, then the screw is cranked down to hold it in place. When the piece is opened, the crew lifts the breechblock out and lays in in that top slot so it is out of the way of the rammer. The screw is hollow down the center so the shell & powder can be loaded.
