Having had to come home to put the Exterior Guard out (they don't do Guard Mount in Thunderstorms) I find that SangerM is all excited about today in history, sending these three tidbits:

1951 McArthur was Relieved. The Executive asserts his primacy over the miltary.

1961 Adolf Eichmann On Trial Adolf would end up at the wrong end of a rope.

1990 SuperGun going to Iraq Siezed

To which I would add:

1814 Napoleon's first abdication; next stop, Elba. Sour looking little spud, ain't he?

1862 Rebels surrender Ft Pulaski, Georgia. Significant in that this massive masonry fort was reduced very quickly - by rifled artillery... sounding the death knell of the utility of this particular type of fortification.

1865 Lincoln urges a spirt of generous conciliation during reconstruction. Andrew Johnson's Presidency almost foundered trying to carry it out. Failure to take this approach in WWI gave us WWII...

1898 President McKinley asks for Declaration of War against Spain -the US tries a little Imperialism on for size. Likes the fit, at least short term:

1899 Treaty of Paris; Spain cedes Puerto Rico, Philippines, Guam to US. The war was fought according to JTG's principles, however. You have to be a *real* Denizen to get that one!

1900 USN accepts its first submarine, the USS Holland.

1933 Hermann Goering becomes Premier of Prussia.

1941 Germans "Coventryize" Conventry, England, a decision many german city-dwellers, especially in Hamburg, Berlin, and Dresden, were to come to bitterly regret.

Goering became the premier of Prussia and ate all the black forest cake immediately increasing his size by 200%. By 1941, he could use his air marshal baton as a toothpick. Sorry I've been gone for a few days (just as I was preparing to go to work on Bill), but the hi speed went down and your page does not like to load with dial up. Viva la revolucion de hi speed.

Yes, I punish the hi-speed challenged. We would conquer the earth if I would forgo foto. Never! Upgrade or die! My. How rude. And selfish. But I *like* the pics!

...dial-up... gack! I lost cable for several hours during the blizzard yesterday, and tried reverting to the horse-and-buggy days myself. A very short-lived excursion. But I did some good reading in (since I wasn't going anywhere, in common with all of Colrado). Hey- it was that or scrub the kitchen floor...

I did all my laundry while hi speed was down. hahahaha. Now I need to find someplace to put it all. I feel a run with boxes of clothes to a charitable institution coming on.

BTW, if you're ever in the Coventry area, the Cathedral is worth a visit. Re-build they did... The government sponsored a national campaign to raise the funds, and part of that was held in the schools- kids were asked to donate a penny. The funds rolled in...Britons saw the bombing of Coventry (and desruction of the cathedral) like we do the WT towers on 9/11. It united the country in outrage against the fiendish enemy, and the Brit government harnessed that for practical and propaganda purposes alike. Anyhoo, the kids donated sacks and sacks of pennies. And these were pennies con cojones... what to do wth 'em? Well -they paved the floor with them, as a kind of tribute to the spirit of the people. It's quite a sight... I saw it in 1970, and my Mum was quite proud of it. She was 6 years old that night, and sat in a home made back-yard bomb shelter the whole time while bombers droned over the city and opened the Gates of Helk (her words). No-one in the family was hurt or killed, but everyone knew someone who was... she became an American citizen in 1962...

Ah, that splendid little war. Imperialism bought me to existence, litteraly. The father of the mother of my father: GreatGramps, came to the Island with the SignalCorps on July '98. Right after the hostilities, he was tasked to redo the Telegraph and Semaphore (Signals with Mirrors and Lights), system throughout the Island. Thus bought high-speed connectivity to a new land (well compared to pony speeds anyways). In any case, while performing this task, he met a beautiful Creole (GreatGradma) and the rest is history.
