The Corner at National Review Online is buzzing with jokes about the commissioning of the USS Jimmy Carter today on the 19th. (Just scroll up and down from the link) In my duty as Jonah's Military Guy, I sent this observation: If I was selected for command of a submarine, I wouldn’t care if it was named the USS Clinton, and tied up to the sub-tender USS Lewinsky for servicing. Commands like that go to very, very few people. If I’ve got to suffer rabbit jokes, so be it. Prediction – absent mechanical problems – the USS Jimmy Carter will...

Anthony - to be fair, the Canadians who comment here are generally members of the "Red Ensign Brigade" (blogroll over there on the right) who are Canadians who feel like you do... but still have enough Canadian-self-esteem to offer opinion and criticism.

You'd be surprised at just how much like us they are in basic values - at least the members of the brigade who comment here!

The crews of the Carter will try harder to outperform their namesake's failed presidency and poor performance as "Commander-in-Chief". They will carry a "chip" on their shoulders forever.
Canadian don't respond until you begin to built a fighting Armed Force instead of a bean-counting social experiment, which lacks force and is poorly armed, and poorly lead. You do your past heroes injustice.

Ah, Bubblehead,I tried to post a comment on yer blog, and it didn't seem to work.

Here's what I think I remember that I was trying to say:

I liked it better when there was a system to naming USN ships; y'know, battleships named for states, cruisers named after cities, destroyers named after heroes, and SUBMARINES NAMED AFTER FISH!!!

I remember going through USS Archerfish as a litle kid, and looking at the picture of her name-fish in her wardroom.

Guilty! Sorry about that... since the Seawolf class boats have 8 tubes, we often talked about the feasibility of firing a "Death Blossom" (from "The Last Starfighter" -- 8 warshots, 45 degrees apart) if you ever found yourself in the middle of an enemy fleet. I was guilty of that -- running around to comment on all the sites that had Carter links, and I didn't even stop to see that you were on the side of good. My bad!

I truly don't see the problem: regardless of how you feel about Carter's presidency, there's no doubt that he did well as a Submariner. If it is legitimate to name an Aircraft Carrier after Bush 41, it seems legit to name a Submarine after Jimmy Carter. naming naval vessels after living persons seems odd, but there it is.

Somebody needs to tell Jonah that JC was in a jonboat not a canoe and the rabbit was a "Swamp Jack". Swamp Jacks are fierce creatures even on their best days not mention they get upward of thirty pounds. They will attack you at the drop of a hat and drop the hat themselves just for sport! But they do stink to high heaven just like any other rabbit when you skin 'em out. Huh? What? Not on topic?

Never mind! :-o

There's a REAL nickname for the Carter; "SWAMP JACK!" yee-haw!

Since the Jimmy Carter was my last boat, and a Sailor always has good feelings for his last boat, I will return to defend her honor. In the meantime, just know that I would put her up against any three other submarines (except Seawolf and Connecticut)or against any surface ship fleet and the Fighting Peanut will come out on top. Semper Optima! (Going deep to re-position for better firing position.)
