The Shepard that is illustrated with black and white sketches, which fit the mood of the story perfectly.
If you ever get the chance, also read No Comebacks, which is an anthology of shorts by Forsythe, each with a twist at the end.]]>

Never seen the story as a stand-alone, but it's been anthologized--I remember reading it years (and years and...) ago, possibly in "Phantom Regiments"...time to go look again.
