Veteran's Day, 2004

Today I will participate in my very first Veteran's Day parade... as a veteran. Not that I haven't been a veteran these many years, that goes with being a soldier and now a retired soldier. I've attended, I've supported, but not participated. No, this is the first time I've been invited because I'm a vet, to participate in a parade. As one of the honorees, so to speak, though just in the manner of participating, not by name or anything. Allow me to thank frequent commenter Monteith, who extended the invitation, and in whose personally-owned Ferret I'll be riding, along...

John, Chief Bill, if I understand him correctly, says you might furnish me with his address so I can follow up on Lt. Marshall, who is, in an odd way, an old friend, even though I never met him.
Is that possible?

Thanks.

                Richard,

The VHPA database lists Jay as a member of Class 70-12, so he wasn't the Marshall I knew--he graduated flight school about the time I DEROSed.

Jay was in the 48th AHC; on 2 February 1971, the unit was based at Dong Ha, but conducting CAs into Laos. His callsign was Joker, so he was second platoon; depending on the casualty rate in the outfit, it's possible he was the PL.

Jay was the only one killed on his aircraft. I won't post the details of his death, but if you need to know, ask John for my address. There are still about 250 surviving members of the 48th, so an inquiry to HQ@vhpa.org might get you a first-hand account or a story from one of his friends; Gary's good at creating space in the Newsletter for just such requests.

1LT Joseph Henry Marshall, US Army Aviator, Canadian, is at 05W-118 on The Wall.

Bill

Chief. He was a grad of Infantry OCS, and then went aviation. He was killed in Feb of 1970 in Laos.
I notified the family and was Survivor Assistance Officer.
His parents are gone and I've lost touch with his sister, but if there's anything to know, I'd like to know it in case I run into her.
Thanks.

                Richard,
I did know a Lieutenant Marshall (he was a 2LT when I knew him) at Ft. Wolters, but I'll have to check the VHPA database tonight to see if he's the same one.
Those two units you mentioned were outside my AO, but I'll see if I can get you something definite on them, too.

I should have said further that Jay enlisted from Almont, MI, but his family is from Canada and he's buried in Arva, a wide spot in the road north of London, ONT.

Say, Chief. You wouldn't have known Joseph H. Marshall III, ILT INF, would you?
I believe he was in the 48th AHC. Perhaps the 40th.

Excellent, John, and many thanks for including our Canadian brothers. Three of her finest sons flew in my old Assault Helicopter outfit--sometimes it seems like only VHPA members know that US Army Aviation was pretty trans-national in the sixties. I wonder if the AFVN disk jockeys ever realized why they were getting so many requests for "No Sugar Tonight"...

All us Murrikins figured Canada got the short end of the stick during Vietnam--she got our cowards, we got her heroes.

I've been sitting here at my keyboard for five minutes now trying to figure out what I want to say to you about your words here. All I can come up with is "thank you." I hope you'll realize I mean to say much more than that, but for the life of me I can't find the words. Thanks, John. (If you ever get north of the 49th parallel, be sure to let me know: people like you shouldn't buy their own drinks.)
