I'll leave it up to people with a better understanding of the cost/logistics side of things as to whether or not it's a good use of this particular class of vessel - but I like the implied capabilities for a Combatant Commander to have available. From Strategy Page today: SUBMARINES: Commando Sub Experiments October 15, 2004: The U.S. Navy is conducting experiments with a SSBN (nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine.) The 16,700 ton, 22 year old USS Georgia is a Trident class boat, and normally carries 24 ballistic missiles, and a crew of 154. But the missiles, and the crewmen...

Well, it *is* better than just scrapping the sub under START-- you get a new capability at the fraction of the cost of beginning from scratch. And we're converting 4 Ohios to this standard.

The SOF guys seem to love having a dedicated platform, and the stealthy cruise missile/SSGN concept has a lot to offer-- IF we can buy enough Tomahawks to fit all the subs out.

Cheers,
Dave
