...and they are volunteers all. In terms of the recently recalled IRR types, maybe reluctant volunteers, but they knew the requirement was there when they enlisted! Heck, I'd love to get recalled. My budget sure wouldn't, and WonderWife™ and WonderMom™ and WonderSis™ would be annoyed... but WonderDad™ would understand, being an old warhorse himself. Austin Bay, back from his own stint of duty as a called-up reservist, has a good one up at Strategy Page: The New Greatest Generation by Austin Bay September 28, 2004 A new greatest generation is emerging -- in Afghanistan, in Iraq and in the other,...

Ref HUDs on AFVs: thou hast entered a typo. HUD (Heads-Up Display) is a fixed-installation mounted to the vehicle (an aircraft, usually); its primary function is to allow the operator (okay--"pilot") to maintain track of his instruments 'n' sensors 'n' stuff without the necessity of continually looking inside at his panel. HMD (Helmet-Mounted Display, which is what you obviously intended to type) lives on the pilot's/operator's electric hat and, utilizing PFM (Pure Friggin' Magic), is slaved to follow head movement and provide targeting data.
In general, the HUD's primary function is to help the operator maintain situational awareness ("Dadgummit--the engine just quit...") with a modicum of target tracking, while the HMD's primary function is to provide an accurate ballistic solution with situational awareness as a nice-to-have addendum.
With the obvious exception of the AH-1F, but then, you already knew that...

Forget the official bordello...I'd be ecstatic if they'd just let us have strippers in the O-clubs again.

Alas, those days were before my time...but I do remember after a couple of formals at IOBC, a bunch of us randy young LTs loading into cars and crashing the Traffic Light Lounge-a strip club notable only for being the first such establishment outside the Ft. Benning main gate. All of us still in our dress blues. Ah, to be young, dumb, and full of you know what again...
