More new Army stuff.

One of the problems with current military vehicle weapon stations is that many of them require the gunner to be fully or partially exposed to enemy fire. Another problem is if you have to abandon the vehicle, you can many times be abandoning a serviceable weapon system which may get turned back on you, either in the fight you are in, or in a subsequent fight.

One way to address this is a remote weapons station. The Army is currently developing one call CROWS, the Common Remotely Operated Weapons Station. It addresses, at least in a partial fashion, both problems. The gunner is not exposed, and, with the removeable joystick, the crew can 'un-ass' the vehicle, take the joystick with them, and the weapon can't be used with the 'under armor' protection and fire control. The weapon is still designed to be dismountable and useable by the crew, so a captured weapons carrier could still yield a useable weapon, but not with the sensing/targeting/engagement enhancements provided by the mount itself.

Downside? More things to break. One thing about a M-2 or Mk19 on a pintle - pretty simple. Click the pic to see the rest of the brief.

Now this is cool -- Dominic Pila certainly would have appreciated such a weapon in Mogadishu. They're going to have some kinks in the targeting mechanism, no doubt, but this should be available pretty soon, if DoD decides to buy it. {Ed note: If the Dominick Pila reference doesn't ring a bell, this will clear it up. Looks pretty similar to the RWS (Remote Weapon Station) used on the Stryker. They can be prone to breakage. Another thing on the plus side, though, is it probably has thermal sights, a huge bonus at night. If I had to bail from a vehicle with a pintle mounted .50, I'd make sure to take the backplate with me.

Yep - and be glad you are wearing a flak vest. I haven't practiced pulling the backplate while scared and under fire... I think I'd be happy to have my Interceptor on in case I lost control of the spring! And, ya gotta remember, the unclas version of these briefs (FOUO counts) don't contain much if any of the 'wart' material, for reasons of both security and, well, let's be honest, ego. They are rah-rah briefs. Even if I had access to more sober assessments (which I don't) I wouldn't be putting that stuff out, either!

I hate to be the contrarian, but why don't they just put metal shield plates on the weapons to protect the gunners. I know that doesn't help with regard to rearward threats, but it seems more useable and easily deployed than this thing.

And the plate is a lot cheaper too. ( and probably lighter, I'd bet you can make it out composite.)

Yeah the plates are good and I used those. I was so happy when I was picked to be certified on the CROWS vehicle while i was in Baghdad. It was the best thing about being over there having that vehicle. I never missed when i had to pull the triger it was on site. Plus i really didn't have to worry about sitting up in the gunners place of the Hummer. It was much safer than sitting up there. Yeah i may not have been able to see everything but what i could see was alot more than alot of regular gunners. This is one of the best weapons the military has ever bought!
