Some battlefield equations are simple.

U.S. Marine Col. Charles Gurganus said gunfire broke out on the northeast corner of the plaza and several people were wounded before Marines spotted two gunmen. When the gunmen tried to attack the Marines, the troops shot and killed one of them, he said, adding that he did not know what happened to the other man.

Asked how he knew the man killed was a gunman, Gurganus said: "He had a gun, and he was shooting at Marines. That's what I call a gunman."

Works for me.

Here's the story.

Hat tip, Sonja!

Remind me of Sam Donaldson interviewing a Marine in the first Gulf War. The Marine had ordinance spread out on the hood of a hummer, and was answering Sam's questions about each piece. The Marine pointed out a grenade, and Sam asked, "What's that good for?" The Marine looked surprised, and then deadpanned, "It kills people and breaks things, sir."

News-wonk: How could you tell you were being shot at, soldier? Marine: Well sir, the little chunks of smoking metal embedded in the wall behind me were the first sign, then there was the really fucking painful burning sensation in my left leg where I got hit. Oh, and the blood. Dead giveaway right there. All over the place, couldn't miss it.

"Things quietened down after I killed him." Cheers JMH

I just saw a story in USA Today with the headline, "Haitian gunmen challenge US Marines." It should have said "Haitian morons commit suicide." On the plus side, the average IQ of Haitians should be going up soon.

Read something where someone referred to the bad guys as 'suspects'. I said that Marine infantry don't have suspects; they have honest citazens and assholes who shoot at them. Once.

Interesting point, Mark. The Canadian army is sending troops to Haiti next week; relations with the locals generally are predecated on the assumption that citizens are the individuals who do not pose a threat, the remainder are targets. Nuances are involved. Cheers JMH
