H&I* Fires 13 July 2006

Open post for those with something to share, updated through the day. New, complete posts come in below this one. Note: If trackbacking, please acknowledge this post in your post. That's only polite. You're advertising here, we should get an ad at your place...

Born American, but in the wrong place. This is a form of immigrant attitude I'm happy with - acknowledging that there's a reason you left the old place, and not demanding to re-establish it here.

An alternative view here, where Mr. Schramm is taken to task... for leaving. H/t, Mike D for the two.

It's time to Close Station and March Order for the movement to the PNW and the Milblogger Shoot. Gotta take the critters to prison, finish packing, etc. I'll leave this place in yer hands. *shudder* -the Armorer

Holy crap..... The Israeli Army BOMBED the Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beruit, Lebanon. They sent ground troops over the border yesterday, and conducted at least 6 air raids overnight. Israel is holding the Lebanese government responsible for controlling the militant group, Hezbollah, which is based in Beruit. It's a very bold move by Israel, who has effectively said that if you harbor those who attack us... we will attack you. This scares the ever-lovin' crap outta me. I'm pretty impressed by Israel's quick response, but damn... just...DAMN. ~AFSister

More fodder for discussion and speculation about where the Middle East (and likely the rest of the world) is headed these days: Michael Ledeen from NRO has today's must-read. - FbL

WOnder if I should point out that today is the 13th...not the 12th....Nah...I let me "Arkansas Relatives that live further north" figure it out when he gets back.

Meanwhile Captain Parker, a 2 time US Army OEF Veteran is fired from his job
Because he went over sea's with the Army Reserve twice. And Jim Duncan of the Wilson County School Board apparently doesn't like that.

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.

Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The UAVs we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to that particular topic. It's also an open trackback, so if (Don Surber uses it this way a lot) someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone".
