H&I* Fires 11 July 2006

Open post for those with something to share, updated through the day. New, complete posts come in below this one. Note: If trackbacking, please acknowledge this post in your post. That's only polite. You're advertising here, we should get an ad at your place...

The American Armored Foundation Tank Museum. *That* just jumped on my list of Places To Visit!

So, shots fired chasing illegal immigrants. Wonder if the story would get different coverage if it was Texas vice Florida? H/t, Larry K.

Life's a Beach - at least as far as the Carnival of Recipes is concerned. Over at Blabber Heads.

Der Adjutant reminds us, SGT B has a birthday today! Go Internet-snipe hunting for presents! -the Armorer

I suspect I would have found Fred somewhat exasperating - but I'd have been drawn back nonetheless. I can't argue with his final wish regarding his remains.
*That* is simply cool. -the Armorer

This is why I went with Kendo when I tried to relive my mis-spent youth (though I din't do no nationals in Fencing, all that wiring the fabric to the frame is boring. Huh? Swords? Oh, if you call flimsy little things with french names swords, fine. Anyway, I did nationals as a wrestler, a *manly* sport). They give you a a bamboo stick and you get to hit people. Hard. A lot. In fact, I found out it pisses off your instructor when you can out-muscle 'em.

Of course, the blisters on the bottom of the feet sucked - but that was just a reason to hit him harder. Especially when he was pissed and made it *easier* to hit him.

Hard.

Besides, we know how dangerous it is to give me something sharp... -the Armorer

I think my car needs an exorcist, or a cleansing, or something. It's a bad luck magnet. Or maybe it's just me... - FbL

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.

Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The UAVs we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to that particular topic. It's also an open trackback, so if (Don Surber uses it this way a lot) someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone".
