Heh. Not much has changed from Cicero's time, eh?

"There is nothing so absurd but some philosopher has said it."

2000 years on, and little new has been said, and nothing has changed in terms of the absurdity.

I like this quote, too: Harper's Index: "Estimated amount of glucose used by an adult human brain each day, expressed in M&Ms: 250"

Moving on...

In court, the teens' attorneys described each youth as contrite and upset about what had happened.

Oh, really? Upset, were we? Good to know. I'm sure Mr. Gaynor was, too. But he's dead, forget him. Let's worry about these guys. Ya, ya, I know. It's the defense lawyers *job* to say this stuff. It would still make my head explode.

How to make friends and influence people, Iraqi Sunni-style. Possible plus side to this - instead of descending into civil war and chaos, Sunni leaders reconsider letting their hotheads run amok as a minority amongst a large, very angry majority with an axe to grind, and consider a little more cooperation. Hey, we can wish. Here is Iraq The Model's take on the event. He was there.

On a lighter note - SWWBO is a little disingenous with her description of this household event.

Hee! A very cold Castle Reader checks in from the Great White East -of - North. Thule, Greenland.

Here at Thule Air Base in Greenland, we’ve become curling enthusiasts too.

It is second only to hockey to us up here 900 miles from the North Pole.

Anything with women’s skating runs a close third !

I believe I am the northern most Castle Argghhh! reader on the planet.

Snerk! More from Mr. Bait, we've been having a running conversation in email. Why not, he's likely stranded at work because of the storms anyway...

Polar Bears…

I had a near run in, on foot with a female and 2 cubs in 2001.

I was hiking across the tundra heading to a glacier twenty miles out from base, when I spotted something off white, almost yellow in the afternoon sun, about a mile and a half in front of me. I hit the dirt and did a quick wind check, I was down wind, and observed the three polar bears move right to left in the distance, after about ten minutes I got up and beat a hasty retreat out of the area.

Had I started my hike 30 minutes earlier the 4 of us would have met in a rocky riverbed and I would not have had a good time.

I am the only idiot,…uh I mean adventurer,…who mountain bikes and hikes the region up here, and thus earned the name Polar Bear Bair from my coworkers.

My wife worries not,…. she makes sure the life insurance is plentiful and premiums are on time.

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.

Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The UAVs we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to that particular topic. It's also an open trackback, so if (Don Surber uses it this way a lot) someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone".
