H&I Fires 22 Feb 06

Open post for those with something to share, updated through the day. New, complete posts come in below this one. Note: If trackbacking, please acknowledge this post in your post. That's only polite. You're advertising here, we should get an ad at your place...

Emperor Misha talks sh1t. No, really. I mean it.

There's a difference between firing on a mosque/church/culturally significant site in self-defense, and blowing it up as an act of terror. Dean gets it about right, I think. Bubblehead has before and afters. No, I'm not interested in arguments that stem from "If we hadn't invaded, this wouldn't have happened." While possibly true, it misses the point. The proximate cause of the attack is the people who attacked - that wasn't an attack on us - that was an attack on Iraqis, more specifically, Shi'ite Iraqis. It does serve to illustrate a difference between Us and Them. We risked casualties in order to not damage those edifices, where possible. They just blow them up.

More Chinese Gun Pr0n. Because you can never have too much. Unless they are marching down your streets as conquerors.

MUA-HA-HA-HA-ha-ha-ha! Got my cert first time, too! Ry - She Who Is A Twit will *hate* this.

Heh. I'm mining Harvey today (no, you *don't* get another link, dude!) - he points out that Jim at Snooze-Button Dreams has a wonderful primer on Job Interviewing. The thing I took away from it? When interviewing for spouse, the sex should be *outstanding*...

I admit it - I'm a fan of curling, too. And it's the only Olympic event that I've watched this year. -The Armorer

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.

Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The UAVs we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to that particular topic. It's also an open trackback, so if (Don Surber uses it this way a lot) someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone".
