H&I Fires 18 Feb 06

Open post for those with something to share, updated through the day. New, complete posts come in below this one. Note: If trackbacking, please acknowledge this post in your post. That's only polite. You're advertising here, we should get an ad at your place...

Meet the new Lara Croft. Ry sent me this - and I took something completely different away from it. Like British Olympians (as in the italicized part of the quote), Ms Adebibe will..

She will now embark on a "gruelling training programme" which will include an SAS survival course and learning how to fire guns in Eastern Europe. [empahsis mine, ed.] Adebibe will also undergo crash courses in archaeology, deportment, elocution and etiquette, and spend lots of time posing for photos in very small clothes.

She has to go overseas because Britain has become so safe from disarming her citizens that she can't learn to fire a gun in Britain...

New caption contest over at The Right Place.

Over at Confederate Yankee, a story about the new attempt by John Loftus to keep in the news - and why that's a problem for the "Saddam Tapes". The messenger, sadly, *does* matter.

If you haven't already seen it - Greyhawk VS the MSM.

ALa offers up a little payback to brunettes...

Heh. Talk about cultural differences... I barely register that hockey exists, much less *women's* hockey. I think I'll continue to let Alan track it, just as I let the Flea be my guide in all things Movie.

MSG 1SG Keith scores his dream job.

See if you can pick up on Jack's point. To say I don't agree would be overstating it - I simply (I think, as Jack is not specific) lay the blame at other doorsteps. Of course, those other doorsteps have also proven, over the course of history, exceedingly inept at much that is there laid out.

Cassie's Caption Contest (a hoot thus far!)

Hmmm. I'm beginning to thinks Jeff's tastes are, um, morphing into a broader spectrum. Well, mebbe not, that's still a long, um, never mind. Hey, Jeff, how do I score a 'loaner"?

Update: SWWBO gave me The Hairy Eyeball. A loaner Serbu product, dear. Not the rack it's in. Really. Nice rack here, don't need that one. There's nothing to see here, move along.

Dumb criminal tricks (leaving aside whether this should be a crime or not - the guy got stopped for *something* after all). H/t, Mr. Completely.

Gunner is enlisting some help for Wikipedia.

While Publicola paints with a wide brush, there's a reason he does so. I'm afraid, based on my own experience as a cop and elsewhere, that I do *not* assume that an LEO is friendly to me. In a sense, it's not their job, but the way law enforcement has morphed over the years, especially with it's militarization, that's the way it is. I do proceed from an assumption that I am their friend, but I will, in fact, make them follow the forms to get information from me, when that information is *about* me.

Hee! Even Jay at Stop The ACLU can swallow his pride now and again. Which is actually a good thing. More pundits should be able to do this, and acknowledge the good as quickly as we jump on the bad.

Mansoor Ijaz has some words for Muslims in an LA Times OpEd piece. H/t, CDR Salamander.

Heh. Over at The Jawa Report, Bluto shows us Alec Baldwin's understanding of how the Court System works. Or, rather, how he *wishes* it would work. And, um, Alec... how is it *bad* that the Veep terrorizes our enemies abroad? Could ya explain to me how that works, plzz? -The Armorer

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.

Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The UAVs we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to that particular topic. It's also an open trackback, so if (Don Surber uses it this way a lot) someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone".
