H&I Fires 14 Feb 06

Happy Valentine's Day to you too, Cassie!

Mr. Completely on the Raytheon RPG "Quick-Kill" system.

Say Uncle on hypocrisy, and the damage Ray Nagin did to Gun Control. Yay, Ray, He's Our Man!

The Rottweiler Emperor annoyed Debbie Schlussel, and she whined grumped to him about it [she made it clear to me in the email where she asks me if I blog out my ass that it wasn't whining. O.k.]. Mistake, Debbie. I stand by my advice, Debbie. If your note to the Rottweiler was like the tone of your email to me, that was just pouring gas on the flames. There's a *reason* Misha is called the Rottweiler. -The Armorer

Two decent pieces in the WSJ this AM. Start with the phrase we've talked about round here: The Long War. I learned a new acronym: AQAM - Al Qaida and Affiliated Movements. Check out info about operations in Djibouti (where we're kicking Jihad Booty) and else where as part of our "long war".

Then, I highly suggest a discussion of Torie Clark's (former Pentagon Spokeswoman) new book Putting Lipstick on a Pig where she will discuss the successes and failures of the Pentagon's Media War. Apparently stole that line from Di Rita, but very apt. I learned some interesting things on this one, too. Like the Taliban military target that was bombed and watching the Taliban drag patients out of a nearby hospital to look like massive civilian casualties: the big American Boogeyman and a few other things.

Last, more rioting in Pakistan over "fake but accurate" Mohammed cartoons. Apparently the students got out of class early though I am at a loss to understand how they have time to riot day after day with their heavy class schedule at the madrassa. -Kat

I think I'll let Baldilocks speak for me on the issue that the MSM won't cover - Al Gore's America-bashing speech in Saudi Arabia - while they fall all over themselves on the Cheney thing. Has it occured to anyone in the media that Al Gore's speech could (in a fashion) hurt more people than Cheney's shotgun? Ala piles on Gore, too, and I feel sorry for her puppy...

I didn't blog this story about Lt. Rebrook when it first came out - because this is what I ultimately figured the diminuendo would be. So, I'm late to the story, but I only have to cover it once.

And... since ya don't buy Our Stuff, get some of Chuck's - the profits all go to the same place.

Ooo! Ooo! Way cool! Russians getting 'screwed' so to speak. I have my own satellite coverage story - out at the NTC, we knew when the sat's would be over, and we sometimes parked our vehicles in ways then sent Ivan messages... hee!

Oooo! Oooo! Gun Pr0n!

Lex channels Bill. Heh. It's all aviator.

Alphecca has a picture of himself with his sweeties (polyamorist!) and the latest roundup on Gun Bias in the Media. -The Armorer.

Har! I've been id'd by Slate, in digits, as a Conservative Blogger! Oy! Okay, I admit it, it's kinda kewl. Hate to tell 'em the link from Hewitt today has been worth about 8 times the traffic the Slate link was, though. Upon reflection, one wonders at the choice of words... I "conceded" that Cheney should suffer whatever appropriate consequences the State of Texas may impose? How is that a concession unless I was arguing something else first? Methinks the writer of the piece either is sloppy with language, or it betrays a bias that we conservatives will automatically close ranks around our guys. Which is more characteristic of the left than the right, if I recall recent political history. How many Dems have resigned when caught doing something dumb, vice Repubs? -The Armorer

*A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires.

Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute.

Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it *is*

The UAVs we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now.

I call the post that because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to that particular topic. It's also an open trackback, so if (Don Surber uses it this way a lot) someone has a post they're proud of, but it really isn't either Castle kind of stuff, or topical to a particular post, I've basically given blanket permission to use that post for that purpose. Another term of art that might be appropriate is "Free Fire Zone".
