I am sooo *not* "with it."

Yeah, yeah, d-uh. I know. The Walkman™ Phones Global 100. There's a reason this blog is *not* listed under "Culture Blogs," nor do I try to compete with the likes of the Estimable Flea. And you can probably figure out from the songs I even recognize when my hearing loss, combined with a lack of interest, caused me to quit listening to "pop" music.

Sony-Ericsson surveyed 700K "music lovers" in 66 countries to come up with a Global Top 100. Because this is such a waste of your life, the rest of this is in the extended post.

Heh. So you showed up anyway, eh? Your life! If it's in italics, I recognize it. If it's bold, I even liked it. Admittedly, I dont listen to hispanic radio stations, and the Russian stuff, gee, doesn't get a lot of air time around here, either (though I like classic russian music).

Not knowing what you do not know is a badge of honour with that list, good sir. Maybe explore #6 a little but that is about it.

J.M. Heinrichs briefed on October 18, 2005 07:22 AM

Most of that list fails to meet the standard expected of music, especially anything vaguely hip-hop/rap, and any attributed to Michael Jackson.

Cheers

Three words: Lowest. Common. Denominator.

Were-Kitty briefed on October 18, 2005 09:17 AM

Like, OH MY GAWD! Jooohn! I can't believe that you, like, didn't highlight all of Britney Spears songs? OH MY GAWD! "Toxic" is a totally bitchin' song, like, ok? "Baby One More Time" is like, soooo yesterday, ok?

And ok, so like, speaking of yesterday, why would anyone like a song NAMED "Yesterday"? It's so... yesterday, ok?

Oh, and if anyone has the 411 on this "Hotel California" place, txt me, like, ok?

I'm Audi!

John of Argghhh! briefed on October 18, 2005 09:19 AM

Heh. Don't go there Kitten. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave...

Were-Kitty briefed on October 18, 2005 10:12 AM

Oh yeah? Well, maybe I will stay away, because, like I also heard that they, um, haven't had any spirit since something like 1969? OHMYGOD... could you imagine? No spirit! I have, like, soooo much spirit, ok?
Yah. Cheerleaders have LOTS of spirit.

*picks up poms... does a jump into the splits...*

We've got spirit, yes we do! We've got spirit, how 'bout you!

cw4(ret)billt briefed on October 18, 2005 10:20 AM

W-K - You've got spirit? Does the Air Force know? They may be able to save a bundle, come procurement time.

Lots of the list is crap. Stuff that's become popular in the last 4-6 years. Like Mr. McCloud alludes, just because it's popular doesn't mean it's tasteful.

Where the heck is Tracy Chapman's Fast Car? Nothing by the KLF? Where's Sir Mix-a-lots Baby Got Back(okay, not tasteful but a mother huge song, and still gets played)? REM's Everybody Hurts? No Cream? No Three Dog Night? No Jim Croce? No Tina Turner or Aretha? This list is FLAWED.

Seems like John turned off his radio in 1986 and has only heard of stuff that's gotten so huge that they turned it into MUSAK or just couldn't be escaped(if I ever hear Losing My Religion again I'll shoot the DJ). Also looks like the Armorer is a big softy, too looking at his liked songs on this list. Ahhhh, how cute.

I also agree that #6 should be investigated. Investigate, then leave it. Cobain is soooooooooooooooooooooooo over rated, and Nirvana is too. And Smells Like Teen Spirit isn't even their best tune. Try the song Valium(not the drug! Jeez, nobody here at Argghhh! needs that.).

Sacrilige! You don't like NOthing Else MAtters? The power ballad to end all power ballads? Occhhhh! Is unbelievababable. Maybe you'd like Whisky Najaro better(sp? Proll'y. Cheif(ret)'s Gaellic is better than mine ever was or ever will be. Maybe he could make it out if I taped him to a chair and made him listen to the song.).

One last thing, did anyone else notice that all the songs on this list are by artists that are on the Sony label, or Sony owned subsidiaries?

Barb briefed on October 18, 2005 11:26 AM

I woulda bolded #1, but we are frighteningly close on our likes in music, John!

In my scattered travelogue, I neglected to mention that I found the most interesting statue in Montreux, Switzerland - that icon of Queen ... Freddie Mercury!

April briefed on October 18, 2005 11:49 AM

And what kind of travesty is it to have NOT A SINGLE RAMONES tune on there?!!!

John of Argghhh! briefed on October 18, 2005 11:50 AM

Ry, nice rant... and you know waaay too much about music. You know who is on who's labels? Sheesh.

And why do you hate Alan so? Or is spelling his name McCloud your way of Anglicizing (vice Scot-izing) McLeod?

Alan briefed on October 18, 2005 12:54 PM

I can hardly get my in-laws and the banks to get it right, John. Ry is just doing a good job at reviviing the Dennis Weaver 1970's spelling.

Were-Kitty briefed on October 18, 2005 12:56 PM

*whistles*
nuthin' to see here, AF... nuthin' at all. Just me and my teen Spirit....

(nice pic, Bill!)

Ry...
You amaze me. VERY nice music rant!

cw4(ret)billt briefed on October 18, 2005 01:34 PM

WHAT? Nothin' from Obećana Zemlja?!?

BO-gussss...

ry briefed on October 18, 2005 02:08 PM

Am I mis-spelling Alan's surname? Not intentional. Trying to be rather respectful of the man, actually. I mean, he bought first print ska records, actual vinyl(I can just see him wearing the suit with the skinny tie, Doc Marten Creepers, and the grey cap buying a The Beat album). And he is proud of it, which is refreshing. I like Alan. Plus there's that Highlander(the movie) connection. Thanks for not thinking ill of it Alan.
I hated the TV show, with Weaver walking around with the cowboy hat and the lambswool jacket. Cheezy 70's murder mysteries. Not nearly as good as Columbo, which I also didn't like. I prefered the Original CSI---Quincy, ME.
In regards to how much I know about music:
What else are you going to do when: a) you're 17 years old and because of some idiot who thought that if he wasn't cheating you he wasn't trying you've torn your acl, pcl, mcl, lcl, the lower patelar tendon, and ruptured a miniscus in your knee? YOu watch TV, listen to the radio, listen to mix tapes by friends, read books, and grouse about losing a track scholarship to a Harvey Mudd sister school(there go dreams of transfering to HM your junior year boyo. I had a scholarship to Claremont McKenna all lined up because they needed an 800m specialist. No knee. No scholarship.); and b) your 20 years old and mindlessly driving a truck up and down I-5 60 hours a week? You listen to the radio, read books(when sitting at the truck scales--not while driving. That's almost as bad as womyn who put make up on while driving.), and listen to mix tapes that trully musical fanatic friends make so you'll stop whining about how mindnumbing your job is.

I just recognized that almost all the english language artists were Sony(Google on Mariah Carrey and her dealings with Sony. Massive contract. Massive court case to break away. And none of her songs listed on the list are from her latest non-Sony albums. Wacko Jacko the child molestor signed the biggest contract with Sony before Mariah.). It's hard not to notice when you live with The Wife. She's big on celeb doings and who got paid how much by whom. See grllls. We males do too pay attention. We just play dumb because it gets us out of stuff we don't like or aren't in the mood for at that particular time. ;)

Casey Tompkins briefed on October 18, 2005 03:00 PM

Oddly enough, my reaction is 90% the same as John's.

While little Michael has long since crossed the Reality Horizon, I have to disagree with J.M. Heinrichs in one respect: Thriller is one of the classic 80s albums.

Oh, and there's no Paul Simon up there, either!

Were-Kitty briefed on October 18, 2005 03:16 PM

Me thinks we need our own Castle 100 list. It'll come in handy for the Castle Blogger Ball.

ry briefed on October 18, 2005 04:01 PM

Lists are too hard. You're bound to annoy someone. You'll overlook something. 'Sides, we span a pretty large variety in tastes. 'tis folly! But if you're wiling to do the polling I'll play.
My five favorites (of the last six months--who really has an all time favorite that's consistent? Not I.): Aquabats 'Super Rad', Led Zepplin "Kashmir", Groove Armada 'I see you baby', Metallica 'Unforgiven', U2 'With or Without You'

I'm pissed. No Elvis? What kind of screwed up world is this anyway?

Heartless Libertarian briefed on October 18, 2005 05:08 PM

You know, I was under the impression the Pink Floyd's The Wall was an album, not a song. Or is it an experience?

And did anyone notice that #84 and #96 are the same?

And how the heck did Satisfaction get left of that list? It's only probably the greatest rock song of all time. And no Elvis tunes either?

John of Argghhh! briefed on October 18, 2005 05:39 PM

And "The Wall" is both a song and the album.

"All in all it's just another brick in the wall..."

"Teacher! Leave those kids alone!"

See? It's impossible to do a 100 list all time list. Or even a 1000 list. Someone will be offended or miffed or will plain forget a favorite because it hasn't been in rotation in forever.

Then music snobs get involved and it goes to hell(applying teflon---being a chemist has it's advantages).

Just don't tell me we have to listen to The Wall while watching The Wizard of Oz, okay? Or burn incense too.
