Naming a house.

Ever since I started reading British literature lo, those many years ago, I've always been tickled by the idea of having a "named" house - that (to me at least) very British custom. I've always hoped to have a home that I thought enough of to take the effort to name it.

And I have pondered and pondered... what would I name it?

Three weeks ago, I had an epiphany. We, the community of Argghhh! named it.

Arrived this last week, installed today, gold letters on a red (of course!) background.

Thank you one and all - but most especially SWWBO, who provided the date of the Founding.

They were a little sloppy with that red paint, though, weren't they? Hafta put that on the 'someday' list...

Neffi briefed on June 26, 2005 05:32 PM

Kool- I grew up around houses named "Dunroamin" and "Pipedream" etc.

It's the address, dolt. Or mebbe the year we win the lottery (if we ever remember to buy tickets)

Fuzzybear Lioness briefed on June 26, 2005 05:47 PM

LOL at Neffi!!!

Very nice, John! I've often wondered whether you had/would do something to connect your physical home to your online home. Very nice... :)

Neffi briefed on June 26, 2005 06:04 PM

...so was '98 the year SWWBO graced your miserable existence? I 'member the pic from N'Awlins- what a beautiful smile that gal has...

John of Argghhh! briefed on June 26, 2005 06:37 PM

That was the year we made it legal, anyway.

She's been gracing things since, oh, '93 or so.

Boquisucio briefed on June 26, 2005 07:17 PM

Oh Great! More Brass to Polish! Just one more task that the Admiral of the Moat has to detail out. Harumpf!!!

John & Beth - Excellent addition to the Castle!

Neffi briefed on June 26, 2005 07:48 PM

Echo Barb- very classy, J&B :) ...
Dolt? DOLT? why, I ain't been called that since- um, well... what's the date today?

John of Argghhh! briefed on June 26, 2005 07:49 PM

It get's worse, Neffi - the Commissar linked to it... because of the 'dolt'... hee!

John of Argghhh! briefed on June 26, 2005 07:51 PM

And Boq - I had the cleaning kobolds in mind - it's cast aluminum with red and gold paint. *Much* easier to maintain!

Neffi briefed on June 26, 2005 08:20 PM

I hooked a link?! Mom will be so proud... (sob) Her boy done good...

Beck briefed on June 26, 2005 08:29 PM

I had a professor who actually named his relatively modest Georgetown home The Branderslev. Never did find out where he came up with that.

Yours, clearly, is far superior.

AFSis briefed on June 26, 2005 08:39 PM

That is so CUTE!

Not as cute as the "SWWBO's coming home happy penquin dance" but cuter than a puppy...

Boquisucio briefed on June 26, 2005 08:41 PM

Phweew - IŽll have the swabbies at the Sand Pebbles stand down on the Brasso.

Neffi briefed on June 26, 2005 08:49 PM

heh, Boq- A ditty when I was a child in England...
"Shine up your buttons with Brasso;
It's only tuppence a tin ...
You can buy it or nick it at Woolworths
But i doubt if they'll have any in."

J.M. Heinrichs briefed on June 26, 2005 11:51 PM

"Foundling in 1998"
"Found in 1998"
"Fonded in 1998"
"Funded in 1998"

Bad eyesight can be elucidating.

Cheers

Kewl. In honor of the occasion, I propose another acronym for SWWBO:

BTLW. That is, Beth The LYDDITE Wife. Ya know, perfectly stable unless confined in tight places with "corrosion products."

(I mind her stories of her travels in airliners.)

Hey, I always refer to my ex-sweety's place as "Castle Bravo," because when she gets angry, she reminds me of a ton or so of incandescent Lithium Deuteride.

kat-missouri briefed on June 27, 2005 02:12 AM

I love that John. Very appropros.

May it stay shiny and yours for a long time.

Boquisucio briefed on June 27, 2005 05:40 AM

Twopence for a tin? Sweet.

Actually, back when polishing was part of my daily routine, I considered myself a Duraglit man myself. In my humble opinion, far superior to Brasso.

John of Argghhh! briefed on June 27, 2005 05:51 AM

Well, as the only polishing I do any more is Castle holdings such as trench art and telescopes, I use Brasso as a starter if the patina is thick and when I've used the abrasive (well shaken) power of Brasso to effect, I switch to Nevr-Dull to finish.

Boquisucio briefed on June 27, 2005 05:56 AM

Nevr-Dull eh? I'll have to give it a try one of these days. BTW - that's a great umbrella holder.

John of Argghhh! briefed on June 27, 2005 06:35 AM

Scale being everything... that is a swizzle-stick holder on the bar...

John of Argghhh! briefed on June 27, 2005 06:41 AM

Oh, and I suspect that Duraglit and Nevr-dull are prolly twins separated at birth - Nevr-dull is just what the PX carries.

Boquisucio briefed on June 27, 2005 07:31 AM

IŽll hafta buy my self a can of that and compare. Brasso & Duraglit was what AAFES & CGME carried back home. Even when I moved to CONUS, I would always take a couple tins with me from my hometown PX. Which reminds me... that mail slot is lookinging quite reddish lately. I have to give her some luvin'.

ALa briefed on June 27, 2005 11:06 AM

That is too cool! Now I want one that says "The House of Sage" ! LOL Think The Man would be as cool about it as SWWBO was? ;)

wheels briefed on June 27, 2005 12:17 PM

When I refer to my house by name, it's "Weedhaven."

John of Argghhh! briefed on June 27, 2005 12:22 PM

Ah, yes. Weedhaven. That would be the backyard...

Neffi briefed on June 27, 2005 06:39 PM

Klingeheim, here...

desult briefed on June 28, 2005 11:31 AM

John, that is so awesome!
