Recruiting is now open for...

I'll be leaving this up top for a few days as a recruiting tool. New content will come in below.

The Castle Argghhh! Fighting Fusileers for Freedom!

Spirit of America is having another blogger challenge, and while I *still* haven't recovered from the last event, I've decided to raise the Fighting Fusileers again and see if we can't give some of those other guys a run for the money.

Besides - the President asks us to (and I ask, even if you can't happen to stand the President..!)

We won last time by lots of small donations, let's see if we can do so again. Hey - skip one beer and send it to Spirit of America via us!

Wanna enlist? Click the poster!

It's late. The blogwar has started and we're behind - but what the heck, every little bit helps!

Let's relive past glories and engender new ones!

Remember:

I have two a growing number of enlistees already -

The Brier Patch
Straight White Guy

Cool Blue Blog

As before - you don't have to have a blog - individuals are welcomed in the Fusileers, we're an all-arms formation! Boudicca went from a frequent commenter Fusileer to Blogger Fusileer - so watch out, the bug may bite! Speaking of all-arms - CAPT H, you were prodding, where's your enlistment, eh?

If you'd like to see your name in lights, so to speak, just send me email proof of your donation , and I'll be happy to post your name. You can edit out the dollar amount, this isn't about that. If you phone in a donation, they'll give you a confirmation number, just send that along in an email. $1.00 or $1,000,000.00, it all gets put to work!

The little snowball, heading downhill, ever growing! We're at a whopping $145 $295 $465 $550 at the time of this "save" and the competition is well, pretty stout. The Northern Alliance has a rather, well, commanding lead, but we have pulled ahead of the Truth Laid Bear's Eco-Team!

So - get the word out, this time we may only be contributing as much as the New Zealanders at Normandy, but we'll be there!

We had over 50 members last time - let's see where we can get this time!

Oh - and to answer Ben's question...

Fusileer:
1. A soldier in any of certain British army regiments formerly armed with fusils.
2. A soldier armed with a fusil.

Fusil - light matchlock or flintlock musket. From the french.

I was after the alliteration, obviously!

curtis briefed on November 30, 2004 07:31 AM

Sir, I am staring at my poster of "Cap Badges of the British Army" which I obtained at The National Army Musuem in London, the Sloane Square Underground stop is the closest. What's my point? While it really looks like you've go a great program and I give my accolades, I do believe that the correct spelling is: FUSILIERS. You might go the the British Army website to confirm.

Note: Very long ago I almost joined The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers (they are now part of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers). I demured as the War Office, at is was then called, informed me that since I would have to swear loyalty to HM The Queen, I would be in violation of the U.S Constitution. They would have taken me, but they just wanted me to know. SideNote: Yes, the Eagle Squadron of WW II fame and many others didn't lose their American citizenship, however...

I have rattled on far too long. All the best.

Lieut. Colonel William C. Curtis, USMC (Ret)

The Patriette briefed on November 30, 2004 07:59 AM

I was wondering about the spelling as well (since my spell check caught the word "Fusileers" when I was making my post yesterday and recommended "Fusiliers"), but hey - it is still a good cause no matter how you spell it.

John of Argghhh! briefed on November 30, 2004 08:57 AM

Sigh. Lady and Gent, don't snipe the Master and Commander - until you secure your escape route!

From (as a minimum) www.dictionary.com

2 entries found for fusileer.
fu·sil·ier also fu·sil·eer
Pronunciation Key (fyz-lîr) n.
1. A soldier in any of certain British army regiments formerly armed with fusils.
2. A soldier armed with a fusil.

As we are not (thus far, at least, though I will allow our 1 Canadian and any other Commonwealth person who joins to defer to the preferred spelling) Brit, I opted for the alternate spelling.

Pllllpppptttt!

J.M. Heinrichs briefed on November 30, 2004 09:39 AM

My dictionary (Consise Oxford Dictionary, approved for the use of HM Canadian Armed Forces) uses the "fusilier" spelling although it lists as an aside "(US fusileer)". But our Armourer does often adopt idiosyncratic spellings.

Cheers
JMH

Barb briefed on November 30, 2004 08:08 PM

The Northern Alliance may be ahead of us - but we've double in the last 24 hours, and they haven't!! GO TEAM :-)

Justin Kardel briefed on December 4, 2004 04:49 PM

Long after the Fusil was obsolete, Fusileers were a unit of highly trained soldiers, just below grenadiers in quality. It kinda makes sence, if you figure there were grenadiers around when 18th and 19th century armies didn't carry grenades.
