It is a relatively nice block of red there. Oh, and Alan - it's red for us right-wing moonbats because last election, USA Today, or mebbe CNN, drew the electoral map with red states for Bush, Blue for Gore - and entered into a dizzying argument with history... except 'Muricans don't study history much in public schools any more and apparently we're completely cool with the break with tradition. Yours wasn't the only head to swell slightly but not explode. Some of us history-minded right-wingers were a little bemused. But heck, according to the blues on KOS, we're all red-neck dog fornicators anyway, so why not embrace the doppler shift?
Sigh. At least this time, the President appears to have won the popular vote. Not just won a plurality - but won the outright vote, too. That hasn't been done since the President's father was elected in 1988, IIRC.
Then there's this gem: Rich Lowry of National Review quoting Peter Jennings as saying "The Liberal years in America are over."
There's certainly some agreement with that over at Kos and Atrios. But I hardly think the liberal beast is slain. It will go home, rest, regroup, and hopefully, when it comes back in two years, will have shed some of it's moonbat baggage. The left has a proper voice in our councils. If they want it heard, they need to have a listen to what they just got told. As I told the lefty lawyer who periodically visits here (not you, Alan) - if the Dems would drop their pathological desire to disarm everyone except the organs of power, and soften their stance on abortion - they would probably own this country, good, bad, or indifferent. I think it would be a net bad, but we can argue that propostion.
The Senate and House are secure, but not bulletproof for the Republicans, so they can't just run roughshod and do something completely stupid, they'll still have to build some consensus (though the Moonbat Brigades at Kos and Atrios don't see that), though the Dems (you would think, but they won't) should ease up on the judges somewhat, seeing as how they lost ground, right?
Yeah, riiiiigggghhhhht. And I'm the paragon of physical health, athletic ability, and sexual stamina I was in college, while we're entertaining fantasies here.
Speaking of college, if Kerry wins it in the Electoral College, there are at least two things to consider.
1. The College is probably safe, it having won a Presidential election for the Dems. Which means that it's less likely the coastal enclaves will dictate life to the rest of the country for a while longer.
2. With the state of congress, we can hope (though those RINO senators make this NOT a sure thing) that Kerry domestically has at least as tough a time as Bush has had. In terms of foreign policy, I think the Republicans should, within reason, acquiesce to what Kerry wants to do - except the Senate needs to keep an eye on the treaties Kerry might wish to sign us up for. If Kerry ends up wanting to run and hide from the Middle East, we should let him. He's either right, or we can kill him with it next time - and Congress can't fight a war the President doesn't want fought. Nor should it.
And the Congress can keep him busy vetoing things (unlike Bush, who hasn't vetoed anything, right?). And, there is one other thing... the Democrats have defined the way on judges. And the Republicans (here comes those damn squishy RINOs again) should make it every bit as hard to ram through appointive law-makers as the Dems have. I used the term law-makers with eyes wide open.
So now it's in the hands of the lawyers.
Which is still better than in the hands of people with guns. Even good people with guns like me. After all, I have a 'tin ear' for politics (which I really admit, from a pundit perspective, leastways).
But we're in for some sausage-making, which isn't pretty.
But, Bush wins an absolute majority, and Daschle has to go find a job asking people if they want fries with that. Nice two-fer.
So, how're you guys this morning? I find the weather outside to be reflective of my mood - cloudy, but clearing after the rain last night - with hints of rain in the offing. A good metaphor for me!
Oh, yeah - once again the MSM looks like idiots, don't they? Though there, towards the end, in some quarters, even they seemed to sense they had mebbe let their emotions completely whack their professional judgement. But whattaya expect? The major elements of the MSM mostly live in the bluest of blue states. Those guys in Atlanta being an exception.
