I'd sure like to hear this on Wednesday...

Fantasy: Bush, after the obligatory "thank yous," raises his hand, stops the dialog for a moment, and says--

"Before I answer your question, (Whomever the moderator is), I'd like to ask my opponent to join me is condemning the violence that's been targeting Republican campaign offices and even private citizens' property across the country.

I understand emotions are running high and many Americans feel deeply committed to their candidate but to harass, to vandalize, to burgle, and yes, to fire gunshots into a campaign office steps over the bounds of legitimate partisanship and the 'rough and tumble' of American election year politics.

We are a nation of laws and are now engaged in an epic struggle against lawlessness and tyranny. As never before, now is the time to show the way, to set the tone and to be the example for millions that are just now beginning to taste the sweet nectar of freedom.

Now is the time to show the way by our example, in a nation known around the world as the first...and best...example of the democratic process, of civil--and civilized--debate. Now is the time to show the people of Afghanistan, of Iraq, and every man, woman and child still living under the yoke of oppression that even the most heated contests can be waged peacefully and openly.

Senator Kerry...I trust I can rely on you to help me in making sure this is an election of the people, by the people and for the people. And now, back to the question..."

Totally agree with you on this one, John. We're supposed to be setting the example for the rest of the world and we're not doing so well on this particular front.
