Desperate Dan and Western Society

On National Review Online's blog, The Corner, John Derbyshire and Andrew Stuttaford were discussing a Brit comic book character, Desperate Dan, and the recent makeover for PC purposes.

DESPERATE DAN [John Derbyshire] Andrew: Sad news about Desperate Dan, one of the favorites of my childhood. I wonder if he's still allowed to shave with a lawnmower? And when he rund right through a brick wall, does he still leave a Dan-shaped hole in the wall, complete with hat? I can't help thinking we could use a few more Desperate Dans in western society. I guess that type doesn't make very good lawyers, accountants, futures traders, or community relations liaison officers. Posted at 09:10 AM

Just off the top of my head, I can help John here.

You want Dirty Desperate Dans in Western Society?

Here's just a random few (but they represent tens of thousands of Dangerous Desperate Dans) in Western Society. And I didn't even mention any of the Paras.

3rd (US) Infantry Divsion

1st (US) Marine Expeditionary Force.

7th Fleet

USAF Air Combat Command

US Coast Guard

The Blues and Royals

Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry

Lord Strathcona's Horse

The Royal Australian Regiment

New Zealand Defence Force

No worries, John. "Rough Men Stand Ready"... as you know.

I'm so disappointed that you left A/102nd MI off your list. Below the radr, I guess.... which isn't such a bad thing, really.

"747 rollin' down the strip
Chairborne Rangers on a TDY trip."

(OK, OK, we weren't that bad. More field time than most "grunts.")

Oof. My sides hurt. That's a great one, Russ!
