Wherein the Armorer tests his Bulgarian Romanian (oops) AK-47 semi-auto clone, reaffirms that he can shoot adequately, discovers his eyes ain't what they used to be and glasses really don't help in that regard anymore, is out-shot by a former Marine (dammit!), and proves to the young kid that an M1A is indeed a superior-shooting weapon to an AK-series clone, and that the old farts are better shots than he is.
All in all, a good day yesterday. My AK clone works fine, just needs to have the post adjusted up a notch (it's probably sighted for the bayonet it doesn't have, since all three of us shot high). It doesn't foul too badly, though after 150 rounds the wooden handguards do not shield from heat anywhere near as well as the M-16's plastic handguards (with the aluminum heat shield in them) do.
I have two best pals from high school. Kevin is one of them. He brought his son Christian (16, and very much, well, 16 - nice kid, polite, but has, *opinions* does Christian). Christian is from Kevin's first marriage, and suffice it to say, there are good reasons that this is the first time I've met him. Purpose of the visit was for Kevin to pick up some of his guns I've been holding in storage, for Christian to see the Arsenal, and for Christian, raised in Hungary, to shoot small arms for the first time.
Weapons of choice being the AK (Christian's going-away fave weapon - he's got a pretty good, if slightly off-kilter Euro-sense about things military) and Kevin's M1A. We shot at the excellent Parma Woods range run by the Missouri Department of Conservation, near Parkville, Mo.
Results? The AK groups well, but the stock comb is too high for the Armorers fat head. The Armorer therefore prefers the folding-stock varieties he has shot heretofore. The M1A? Better weapon, as far as accuracy is concerned. Both shooting mil-standard ammo.
Some targets (after we'd run about a hundred rounds getting warmed up and training Christian). I don't have any of Christian's targets, he took those home to appall his mother.
First target - 50 Feet, open sights, seated, not using a rest. 7.62x39 Soviet round (something over two inches) for scale in the pics. The Armorer is out of practice, and has his finger too far through the trigger. As ever, click the pic for hi-res.
Second target, 50 feet, open sights, seated, not using a rest. The Armorer is having vision and breathing problems here.
Third target - 75 feet, open sights, seated, not using a rest. The Armorer is all over the place, but it would still punch out your heart. Eight rounds, semi-rapid fire.
Target four - Same as above, quick shift target.
Target five - Same as above, shift target again. Rushed the damn shot.
Last target. Damn Marine with his M1A, shooting 75 feet, seated, unsupported.
10 rounds. Yes, damn him. 10.
Bastard.
This is what blogs were invested for. Most satisfying. Sorry about the Marine frustration... Perhaps you should have been shooting bigger guns?
Umm. I meant "invented" but I sure an investation of some kind could be imagined.
When the Flea makes it here, we will take him to visit the range. Make sure to come Wed-Sun, as the range is closed Mon-Tue.
As for investion - the Arsenal will take donations....
8^)
Well, Kevin was also a US Army Reserve artilleryman, though he was a gun dog, not a gunnery god, such as myself...
Perhaps, if the Flea chooses an especially auspicious time to visit the Arsenal, we'll be able to take the mortar out and do a little indirect fire.
Something all Pusillanimous Quakers should experience!
Lessee, what can we do about that Marine? Have to be careful here, they really are quite dangerous... Maybe a huge, yummy, heavy meal, followed by some "good lovin'" from a cute gal just before the range session. Cain't shoot when cuttin' z's. Six Jolt Colas in a row? BZ? That might work. I've always wanted to try some BZ. The guy who invented it said he had to have someone follow him around with a mattress for a couple of days for when he fell over at random intervals. (He tested it on himself.) Well, that might be hard to get. A Jimson Weed salad?
No, I don't think there's any form of cheating that would help, he really does seem to be a better shot than you. Sorry.
Lemme add you to the 'bastard' list, dude.
Send me some of your targets, where you are outshooting me, unsupported.
Hmph!
Truth is, Kevin was using a scope on the M1A. I didn't make a point of it, because he still outshot me when I was shooting the M1A (but that target went with Christian).
But since y'all are picking on me - my targets are open sights. Pllllpppptttt!
Back when I was shooting regularly, I could run 24 rounds (3 clips) through my M1 Garand and keep them in the circle of an NRA 100 yard target, at 100 yards, standing unsupported. This using Beligian mil surp ammo of 1950 vintage. I think the diameter of the circle was either 16" or 18". And I learned that from my Dad, the navy only taught me to split atoms to make hot water. He spent a year on the governor's 20 for the Michigan National Guard in the early 1970's.
And the scope definitely makes a difference. As for your AK clone, I would be pretty happy with groups like that.
Sheesh. You guys are tough on a blind fat guy.
Send me your targets or pictures of targets.
Let's see how you blog-snipers really shoot.
Open sights, unsupported, mil surp ammo in mil-std firearms, please. Don't need no bench-rest 60X tack-driver custom-rifle, handload targets.
