There's a submariner's career that ended here. He may have been a Russian - but ya still gotta feel for the Captain of the Novomoskovsk.

Update - The Flea, a more gentle soul than I, points out the the Novomoskovsk (or a boat of the class, if she is the name-ship for same) had a more successful day in 1998 - launching a satellite for the Germans. Which shows how far Europe has come, that the Russians are launching stuff for the Germans, not at them - and vice-versa.

I was interested in this story too.

It was a better day for the Novomoskovsk back in July, 1998 when they launched a satellite while submerged. Neat!

Friends in the Former Evil Empire (now the Perplexed Empire) tell me that the Russian Navy is now more reminiscent of the one that was so easily beaten in 1905, rather than the quite formidable Cold War navy. One friend stated in an e-mail that his ship couldn't sail because someone had stolen so many fittings and equipment off the ship that it could not even leave the dock!
