WHY IS IT THAT WE HAVE TO SPEAK ENGLISH?

In honor of Matt's Birthday-

An officer in the US Naval reserve was attending a conference that included admirals from both the US Navy and the French Navy. At a cocktail reception, he found himself in a small group that included personnel from both navies. The French admiral started complaining that whereas Europeans learned many languages, Americans learned only English. He then asked: "Why is it that we have to speak English in these conferences rather than you speak French?"

Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied: "Maybe it's because the British, Canadians, Australians and Americans arranged it so you would not have to speak German."

The group became silent.

Hat tip to Rochelle!

IPDATE: In all honesty, however - France currently leads the Anglosphere in visits to this site, with the Canadians offering the next busiest mixed representation of the Anglosphere.

Put up pictures of French rifles - and they will come, even if I'm not always polite to their politics and leaders.

But the real surprise this month is Poland. At 4748, they lead even the US .mil addresses for visits - and by a comfortable margin of 1200! Udają się Polska!
