

1689 Parliament adopts the [English] "Bill of Rights" - Something Parliament, with the willing passivity of the people, keeps trying to knock bits off. But that really is the way of the world when it comes to government. They're always trying to make it easier for themselves. So we have to keep making it hard!
1897 1st submarine with an internal combustion engine demonstrated - this was news to me! I knew Holland had done it - I just didn't realize how (to me) early!
1944 Battle of Bulge begins in Belgium - Hitler *finally* figures out Americans can fight, as we hold him off without the Allied Tactical Air Forces. And when the sun comes back out... the Combined Arms Team rolls to the Elbe!

My Grandpa was captured on this date by the Germans...he was with the 116th Infantry as a mortarman..Hodges' First Army, I believe...spent the rest of the war in Stalag 12, which was liberated by the Russians....he was captured by Volksgrenadiers that he reckoned were about 15 to 17 years old...captured near Winterspelt, Germany....
