1587 Mary Queen of Scots (1560-1587) beheaded by her cousin Elizabeth - consolidating her hold on the throne and initiating an important era of exploration and innovation. And Shakespeare, too.
1978 Golda Meir, prime minister of Israel (1969-74), in Jerusalem at 80 - having whupped the Arabs even on the Arabs best day, in 1973 - giving Israel a chance.
Event
1776 Washington's army crosses the Delaware River from NJ to
Pennsylvania - giving us an enduring legend.
1933 The Fleet Marine Force established
1941 FDR declares December 7, 1941 "A date that will live in infamy." and asks Congress to declare war on Japan which they do.
1941 Japanese a/c destroy U.S. a/c at Clark and Iba airfields,
Philippines
1941 Japanese destroyers attack Wake.
1941 Japanese troops attack Hong Kong, not a banner day in British military history.

The Japanese were very, very, busy on this day, in 1941. But their time would come.
